Metal Fabrication/Welding
Offered at the Newton Campus
Program Length:
Description
This combined program provides the student with a complete experience of basic Metal Fabrication production as it pertains to an industrial metal fabrication shop. Students will develop the necessary habits concerning safety and the proper use of time, machinery, materials, and the work skills required to be a competent trades person in today’s workforce.
Metal Fabrication is the interpretation of technical drawings and layout of metal components, cutting and shaping of those components, through to assembly and welding or fastening to create the finished product. In this multi step process from metal plate and structural shapes to the finished product, the metal fabricator is responsible for maintaining the tolerances required for the complete job. Welding is one of the important skills within the fabrication process and requires good hand eye coordination to control the welding arc and the molten metal puddle. Welding filler metals and base metals require special matching and care in preparation, as do the welding equipment and shielding gas. This knowledge and these skills are included in the “C” Level Modules and continue in welding specialties in Levels “B and A”.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of Kwantlen’s combined Fabrication/Welding Program are well prepared to meet the demands of industry. They will be prepared to enter an apprenticeship or work as Metal Fabricators in areas of structural steel, heavy equipment, machinery manufacturing, mining, petro-chemical, transportation, and marine industries.
Student Profile
The program attracts both high school and mature students. Advanced standing is given to the students with previous post secondary training.
Admission Requirements
Students must meet either the regular student admission category or the mature student admission category in addition to the following:
Note: Students with disabilities must contact the program coordinator to discuss the required skills and competencies and ensure that accommodations can be made.
Content
Course places emphasis on theory and hands on shop experience and is the basis to which the skills are developed in the program. This program is developed around the individual needs of the student and these needs will determine its actual length. The program is designed to accommodate for past experience and credit and/or advancement will be given to students who can demonstrate learned skills plus theoretical knowledge.
The course content is organized into three levels:
Each level is in multiple modules to ensure maximum flexibility for individualized training. Metal Fabrication Level-1 is combined with modules from Welding Level – “C” to contain flexibility and credits, as well as to reduce time requirements. Students will require appropriate personal safety clothing, footwear, basic tools, and toolbox.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of all three levels, students will receive a Citation.
