Description
The Gerontology-Based Recreation Program educates students to
apply theoretical and practical knowledge of gerontology,
therapeutic recreation interventions, and recreation and leisure
programming in the community, senior day centres, and long-term
care settings. This ten month certificate program is offered full-
time from September to June. A part-time program is designed to
be completed within two years. An access course, GBRC 1090 is
available for graduates of the Activity Coordinator Program
previously offered at Kwantlen University College*.
Career Opportunities
The graduate of this program is qualified to work in a variety of
settings (assisted living, long-term care, special care, adult day
centers, parks and recreation for seniors) as a front-line practitioner
in therapeutic recreation for seniors. Graduates are prepared to
function collaboratively as members of a multi-disciplinary health
care team.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the general Kwantlen University College
requirements, the following specific prerequisites apply to this
program:
- Attendance at an information session
- Immunization consistent with the requirements of clinical agencies
- Satisfactory medical assessment by a physician completed within six months prior to entry into the program
- Completion of 50 volunteer hours within a gerontology-based recreation setting (adult day centre, extended care facility, assisted living)
- Two supportive employment/volunteer letters of recommendation from persons in a responsible position (excluding family)
- A valid First-Aid Certificate and CPR level C must be completed prior to first practicum
- A criminal record search completed within three months prior to enrolling in the program
Students in the Gerontology-Based Recreation program are
required to demonstrate the ability to perform a variety of
cognitive, emotional and psycho-motor skills safely and
knowledgeably. Students with physical, intellectual or emotional
disabilities are obligated to contact the coordinator of the
Gerontology-based Recreation program to discuss the required
skills and competencies.

Tuition
$6500.00 (subject to change; student loans are available) A non-
refundable deposit of $350 required.
Note: Additional student and administrative fees may apply to this
program.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded
a Certificate in Gerontology-Based Recreation.
* Note: GBRC 1090 Access for Geriatric Activity Coordinators
Students who have a Kwantlen CE Citation or Certificate from the
Geriatric Activity Coordinator Program or equivalent can take
GBRC 1090 and apply for advance standing into the program.
