Associate of Arts Degree in Creative Writing

DESCRIPTION

Creative Writing is an excellent foundation for a variety of studies in the Arts. Students who wish to major in Creative Writing are strongly encouraged to complete an Associate of Arts degree with a concentration in Creative Writing.

CONTENT

Within the framework of the Associate of Arts degree, students must complete at least 60 credits with a minimum of C in each course, including the following:

Both of:
- CRWR 1100 Introduction to Creative Writing I
- CRWR 1110 Introduction to Creative Writing II
Both of:
- CRWR 2300 Drama, Fiction and Poetry I
- CRWR 2310 Drama, Fiction and Poetry II
At least one English literature course at the 2000 level:
- ENGL 2301 Canadian Literature in English
- ENGL 2309 Literature of the United States of America
- ENGL 2310*
- ENGL 2313 Studies in Major Authors
- ENGL 2315 The Comic Voice
- ENGL 2316 English Literature: 14th to 18th Centuries
- ENGL 2317 Readings in the English Literary Tradition: 18th to 20th Century
- ENGL 2319 The Novel in English: Its Development
- ENGL 2320 Studies in Poetry
- ENGL 2330 Studies in Drama
- ENGL 2340 Studies in Fiction

TRANSFER

Students who receive an Associate of Arts degree in Creative Writing from Kwantlen University College will have appropriate course coverage to enter the Creative Writing major program at the University of British Columbia; however, this does not guarantee a position in the major program because admission in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia is also based on students’ portfolios.

The Creative Writing major program at the University of Victoria requires an additional two courses in Creative Writing at the 2000 level or higher. Currently, students can fulfill these requirements by completing two of the following three courses at Kwantlen University College: CRWR 3110, 3120, or 3130. However, completion of these two additional courses does not guarantee a position in the major program because admission in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of Victoria is also based on students’ portfolios.

The Creative Writing major program at the Malaspina University College requires an additional three courses in Creative Writing at the 1000 or 2000 level or higher.
