Associate of Arts Degree in English

DESCRIPTION

Concentration in English is an excellent foundation for a variety of studies. Those who wish to major in English are encouraged to take a variety of English courses within an Associate of Arts degree.

CONTENT

Within the framework of the Associate of Arts degree, students must complete at least 60 credits with a minimum of C in each course including the following:

One of the following:
- ENGL 1100 Writing, Reading and Thinking: An Introduction
- ENGL 1110*
At least one of the following first year English courses:
- ENGL 1202 Reading and Writing about Selected Topics: An Introduction to Literature
- ENGL 1203*
- ENGL 1204 Reading and Writing about Genre: An Introduction to Literature
- ENGL 1205*
- ENGL 1206*
Both of:
- ENGL 2316 English Literature: 14th to 18th Centuries
- ENGL 2317 Readings in the English Literary Tradition: 18th to 20th Centuries
At least one of the following English courses:
- ENGL 1201*
- ENGL 2301 Canadian Literature in English
- ENGL 2309 Literature of the United States of America
The English department strongly recommends that students who are pursuing an Associate of Arts Degree in English from Kwantlen University College also complete at least one additional second year course chosen from the following list:
- ENGL 2310*
- ENGL 2313*
- ENGL 2315 The Comic Voice
- ENGL 2319 The Novel in English: Its Development
- ENGL 2320 Studies in Poetry
- ENGL 2330 Studies in Drama
- ENGL 2340 Studies in Fiction

TRANSFER

Students who receive an Associate of Arts degree in English from Kwantlen University College will have appropriate course coverage to be eligible to enter the English major program at Simon Fraser University.

Students who receive an Associate of Arts degree in English from Kwantlen University College will have appropriate course coverage to enter the English major program at the University of Victoria; however, the University of Victoria strongly recommends that students also have a reading knowledge of a second language.

Students who receive an Associate of Arts degree in English from Kwantlen University College will have appropriate course coverage to enter the English major program at the University of British Columbia; however, the University of British Columbia also requires students to have maintained an average of at least 68% in six credits of second-year English courses for Language Major and an average of at least 72% for Literatrue Major. Students who wish to enter the Language Major will need to complete ENGL 229 at UBC.
