Fine Arts Certificate

DESCRIPTION

Thirty credits are required for the Certificate Program. The Fine Arts Foundation Certificate is a self-contained one-year program, that allows students to continue to the Fine Arts Diploma Program or apply to other art schools or universities. The credits may also apply to other Kwantlen programs such as Interdisciplinary Design Studies, Graphic Design for Marketing, Interior Design or Fashion Design.

The foundation year is a program of related courses concerned with the fundamentals of visual art and visual communication. It provides a period of study, exploration and intense development of ideas and techniques.

During this year students will study both two-dimensional and three-dimensional aspects of the fundamentals common to Fine and Applied Arts. See below for a full listing of course requirements for the 30 credit program.

General Kwantlen admission requirements apply.

Additional Requirements

Students wishing to complete the Fine Arts Diploma in two years can apply for the Priority Registration option. Up to twenty students will be accepted for this option. These students must commit to registering for a full course load (5 courses) per semester and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Priority registration will be granted to these 20 students.

Admission to this option will be based on a successful portfolio presentation and interview conducted in early May. Entry will be for the fall semester only.

Applicants must telephone the Fine Arts Coordinator at 604.599.2224, (v-mail 9160) by the middle of April to arrange to deliver their portfolio to the department. A team of Fine Arts instructors will review the portfolios. The department will telephone pplicants if they are to be interviewed.

A student’s portfolio should consist of a maximum of 20 pieces. A sketchbook is an important element to include, as it is indicative of your creative process. Students should choose works that reflect a diversity of techniques and subject matter. For example, your selections may include drawings, paintings, sculptures, design, printmaking, photographs, ceramics, and video. It is not necessary for the work to be framed or mounted. Works that are too large or fragile to transport can be documented digitally or photographically as slides or prints.

CONTENT

Both first and second year are focused on the fundamentals of contemporary art practice. All students are encouraged to take a wide range of studio and academic courses with the intent to build a dynamic and diverse portfolio. Each semester students are free to design their own composition of courses reflecting both personal and academic goals. It is strongly recommended that students work with a faculty advisor in order to plan the most effective course of study.

First Year - Certificate and Diploma

Students should design their curriculum to reflect a balance of 2 and 3 dimensional studies.

Second Year - Diploma

The 30 credits for the second year must include 24 Fine Arts credits and 6 additional academic credits. It is recommended that at least one academic elective is an English course.

The department currently recommends that students consider a course of study that includes specializing in one or more areas, such as ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

TRANSFER

Students planning to enter a university after their first or second year should check transfer requirements before choosing their electives. See the appropriate university calendar for details. Students are encouraged to take both terms of any given discipline (i.e. both Drawing I and II) to facilitate effective university transfer status.

GRADUATION

Upon successful completion of first year, students will be awarded a Certificate in Fine Arts Foundations.

Upon successful completion of years one and two, students will be awarded a Diploma in Fine Arts.
