Graduation
Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a Diploma of Technology in Automation/Robotics.
Description
Automation combines electronics, electrical and mechanical expertise. It includes knowledge of the interaction and control of motors, computers, pneumatics, hydraulics, and other processes used in manufacturing.
The Automation/Robotics Technology program is accredited at the Technologist level by the Association of Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (ASTT) of British Columbia. The ASTTBC is a professional association, which registers and certifies technicians and technologists in British Columbia. Accreditation provides assurance of high educational standards in technology programs in institutes of technology and community colleges through a program that is nationally recognized.
Particular attention is given to hands-on experience in well-equipped labs.
Career Opportunities
Automation/Robotics technologists are involved in all phases of industry where the control of production, distribution and manufacturing processes through automation is in demand. This program provides students with training in the process control concepts and the control equipment used in industrial systems.
Graduates find jobs in industries using computers and electronics to control industrial processes. They can develop, manufacture and maintain instrumentation and control (analog and digital) systems that emphasize automation and robotics applications.
Over ninety percent of Kwantlen's graduates from this program have found directly related employment within a short period following graduation.
Student Profile
The program attracts both high school and mature students. Advanced standing is given to the students who have previous post secondary training.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the regular Kwantlen admission requirements, students must have:
- C or better in English Language Arts 12 (English 12) or Technical and Professional Communications 12
- C+ or better in either Principles of Mathematics 12 or Applications of Mathematics 12.
- Principles of Physics 11 or Applications of Physics 11.
Direct Entry
An applicant may have met the above prerequisites from secondary school or may have gained the necessary skills in Mathematics, Science and English by upgrading through one of the many post-secondary courses and programs offered by Kwantlen and other adult educational facilities.
Mature Student Entry
An applicant may have gained both academic and related technology skills in a less formalized way and would like consideration for the program.
Applicants for admission are considered on an individual basis. An applicant's educational background and/or work experience may be accepted as part of the admission requirements. An interview or appropriate tests may be required to determine the applicant's placement level. Kwantlen offers academic and vocational upgrading programs. Call Admissions for more information.
Transfer
The graduate is eligible for direct entry into the bridging programs to third year electrical engineering at Lakehead University or the University of Victoria. The graduate is also eligible for direct entry into certain related degree programs at BCIT. Transfer credit to other university programs may be possible on a course by course basis.
