Most of these Biology courses have both a lecture and a lab component.
Biology courses are operated on an open access audio-tutorial system. Students taking a biology course are expected to attend a weekly two-hour class, and should plan to spend six hours a week in the laboratory, with a minimum of one hour at a time. Students should ensure they make this time available when timetabling. Laboratory hours are posted at each of their entrances. Students intending to transfer to third year at SFU or UBC with a biology major are advised to take at least two, and preferably all, of the following courses: BIOL 2320, 2321, 2322, 2323 and 2421.
These are Biology courses, and the use of animal and plant tissues may be required.
BIOL 1110 cr - 5
Principles of Biology: The Biosphere
Biology 1110 examines the individual organism and its interaction with its biological and non-biological environments. The characteristic patterns (anatomy) and mechanisms for maintenance (physiology) of the individual organism are examined.
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)BIOL 1160 cr - 5
Anatomy and Physiology I
BIOL 1160 examines the major organ systems for support, movement, circulation, respiration and digestion with an overview of nervous and endocrine control and regulation. It includes an introduction to pharmacology and microbiology. This course operates in a self-directed modular format.
Prerequisites: Chemistry 11 or CHEM 0094; and Biology 12 or ACPB 0096 (BIOL 1110 can replace requirements for Chemistry 11 and Biology 12)
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)BIOL 1210 cr - 5
Principles of Biology: The Organism
BIOL 1210 focuses upon patterns and mechanisms of inheritance, metabolism and development in the individual organism. Cell ultrastructure is examined as a basis of these processes.
Prerequisites: BIOL 1110 or equivalent
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)BIOL 1260 cr - 5
Anatomy and Physiology II
BIOL 1260 continues the examination of organ systems, focusing on the excretory, nervous, immune and reproductive systems with a major emphasis on survival and adaptation. It continues with an introduction to pharmacology and microbiology. This course operates in a self-directed modular format.
Prerequisites: BIOL 1160
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)BIOL 2320 cr - 5
Genetics
The principles of heredity, transmission, exchange, mutation, and functioning of genetic material are covered in this course.
Prerequisites: BIOL 1110 and BIOL 1210 or equivalent
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)BIOL 2321 cr - 5
Cell Biology
This course consists of a survey of cell ultrastructure along with a consideration of cellular functioning. Students are expected to acquire considerable skill in the preparation of materials for microscopic examination.
Prerequisites: BIOL 1110 and BIOL 1210
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)BIOL 2322 cr - 5
Ecology
Students will learn the basic properties of ecosystem, community and population ecology, including energy transfer, mineral cycling, community structure and dynamics, competition, predation, evolution and population dynamics. They will also perform lab and field work.
Prerequisites: BIOL 1110 and BIOL 1210
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)BIOL 2421 cr - 3
Cellular Biochemistry
This is a one-semester introductory cell biochemistry course which deals with the patterns and mechanisms of cellular metabolism. Particular attention is paid to the structure and function of proteins and to the interrelatedness of catabolism and anabolism. The regulation of metabolic pathways is also examined.
Note: There is no Lab component with this course
Prerequisites: BIOL 2321, CHEM 2320
Corequisites: CHEM 2420
Transferable (refer to transfer guide)
