Observing and Recording Children's Behaviour I

This course will focus on observation methods and the recording of children's behaviour in naturalistic settings. Students will spend time in early childhood centres observing behaviour and discussing their observations in seminars to increase their understanding of the principles of child development.

Communications I

This course is an introduction to the communication process. The self component of the communication process will be emphasized.

ECED 1104

Foundations of Early Childhood Education

This course will provide an introduction to the field of early childhood education. Early childhood terminology, types of early childhood programs, early childhood educator training, and program/training standards will be discussed. Characteristics of quality child care, along with model programs will be examined. A broad overview of historical figures and events in addition to contemporary events and influences will be explored.

ECED 1105

Program Planning I

The focus of this course will be on the role of the adult in providing a quality, early childhood physical and interpersonal environment which facilitates learning through play. Characteristics of quality early childhood program planning, along with criteria for selection of toys, equipment, and materials will be examined. Observing children at play, along with evaluating and designing appropriate early childhood learning environments will be explored.

Interpersonal and Professional Relationships

Students will critically examine aspects of self-awareness and self-responsibility, professional communication, interpersonal relationships, conflict-resolution and problem solving strategies, advocacy, and ethical conduct. They will demonstrate effective interpersonal and professional communication skills.

Foundations of Early Childhood Education

Students will learn about the historical and contemporary issues affecting early childhood education. A major emphasis will be on best practices. Students will become familiar with the child care occupational competencies needed to provide inclusive services.to young children and families in the community.

Principles of Early Childhood Learning Environments

Students will examine the role of the early childhood educator in providing a quality environment which facilitates the development of the whole child through play. Students will reflect on the elements of best practicse and determine the characteristics of quality early childhood curriculum planning. Issues of diversity and inclusion will be emphasized.

Socializing the Child

Students will critically examine the effects of societal factors and characteristics of the family that influence the socialization of the child. They will also discuss the role of the Early Childhood Educator in supporting the family.

ECED 1121

Block Practicum and Seminar

The student will have full-day placement in a childcare centre. The purpose of this time is to provide an opportunity for the student to demonstrate appropriate and suitable affective qualities associated with effective early childhood educators.

Child Growth and Development I

This course will overview philosophical and theoretical orientations that have influenced the understanding of child development. Issues related to social, physical, emotional, cognitive, and creative development will be highlighted. Orientations and issues will be explored together with relevant research.

Guiding and Caring for Young Children I

This course will overview philosophical and theoretical orientations that have influenced specific approaches to child guidance. Concepts related to these approaches will be highlighted. Emphasis will be on the preschool years.

Theories of Human Development & Learning

Students will analyze selected philosophical and theoretical orientations that provide an understanding of child development and learning. They will also examine the relationship of these orientations to approaches used in understanding the young child.

ECED 1201

Observing and Recording Children's Behaviour II

This course will focus on observing children experiencing various curriculum activities. Students will spend time in early childhood centres observing behaviour and discussing the implications of developmentally appropriate activities in fostering growth and development of the "whole child." These observations and interpretations will be discussed in seminar.

Communications II

The focus of this course will be to examine the social and cultural influences of language, nonverbal messages, and listening in the communication process.

Program Planning II

The focus of this course will be to examine inter-related components of early childhood curriculum that foster developmentally appropriate experiences for young children. Developmental continuums, concept development, language skills and fostering techniques, and elements of good curriculum plans will be examined. Specific curriculum areas will be designed, implemented and evaluated for the on-site lab/day-care setting and other early childhood centres.

ECED 1206

Sociology of the Family

This course will focus on the family from sociological, cultural, and ecological perspectives. Current social issues that impact upon the family will be discussed.

ECED 1211 cr - 6

Field Experience: Application

Students will observe and record children's behavior and use theories of child development and guidance to explain that behavior during partial day sessions in an early childhood group setting. Further, students will implement and evaluate curriculum designed for whole child development. They will be required to make observations focused on principles of early childhood learning environments and health and safety.

Guiding Children's Behaviour

Students will examine the role of the early childhood educator in the guidance and nurturing of young children. Developmentally appropriate expectations and effective communication will be emphasized in the application of prevention and intervention strategies which promote the socialization of the young child.

Health and Safety

Students will learn aspects of health and safety as they apply to the preschool setting. Issues include provincial licensing requirements and promoting the health, safety, and emotional well-being of children in preschool settings.

Block Practicum I

Students will apply theoretical knowledge about young children, learning environments and curriculum development in a full day practicum setting. Students will display interpersonal skills, professional and ethical behaviors, as well as effective care giving.

ECED 1221

Block Practicum & Seminar II

The student will have full-day placements in childcare centres. The purpose of this time is to provide an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to work with young children. The student demonstrates competency by applying developmentally appropriate child care guidance and curriculum practice.
Prerequisites: ECED 1121; mastery achieved. All 1200 level courses passed with a minimum grade of B-.

ECED 1230

Child Growth & Development II

This course will focus on principles of child development from conception through infancy and toddlerhood. Issues related to social, emotional, cognitive, and physical/perceptual development will be highlighted for the first two years of childhood.
Prerequisites: ECED 1130 - minimum B- achieved

ECED 1233

Guiding & Caring for Young Children II

This course will focus on the discussion of issues relevant to guiding and caring for young children. In addition, applications of theories of child guidance will be examined and evaluated. Guided application in the lab/day-care setting and other early childhood centres will provide reality-based learning.

Child Growth and Development

Students will analyze selected research and theories that provide them with a comprehensive understanding of domain based, whole child development from prenatal through adolescence, with special emphasis on children aged 2-7 years. Issues of diversity and inclusion will be addressed.

This course will focus on observing and recording the dynamics of program integration. Students will spend time in early childhood centres observing adult-child interactions and the implementation of integrated program plans. All observations will be discussed and evaluated in seminar.

ECED 1302

Communications III

The focus of this course will be to examine the dimensions and dynamics of group and professional relationships, interpersonal and group conflict resolution. Creative and task-oriented group problem solving strategies, and written communication will also be examined.
Prerequisites: ECED 1202 - minimum B- achieved

ECED 1305

Program Planning III

The focus of this course will be to plan, implement, and evaluate multicultural, non-stereotypic, developmentally appropriate early childhood programs. More specifically, development of a personal program philosophy, along with the design, integration, and rationale of materials, and curriculum for early childhood programs will be emphasized. The on-site lab/day-care along with other early childhood centres will provide reality-based settings.

Health, Safety & Nutrition I

Students will learn aspects of health, safety, and nutrition in preschool settings. Issues such as provincial licensing requirements, meal planning and providing a healthy and safe environment for young children will be covered.

ECED 1312 cr - 7.5

Field Experience: Integration

Students will have partial day sessions in an early childhood group setting. During this time, the students will implement and evaluate appropriate early childhood learning environment designs by applying observational skills; integrate knowledge of child development and behaviour; programming principles; curriculum design; and health, safety, and nutrition.

Managing Problematic Behaviours

Students will learn about underlying causes of social behaviours that are difficult to manage in an Early Childhood group setting. They will critically examine approaches for managing these behaviours. They will also examine the role of the Early Childhood Educator as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Designing Early Childhood Learning Environments

Students will design early childhood learning environments utilizing a theory into practice model. They will use their knowledge of child development, methods of guidance, principles of early childhood learning environments, and curriculum design.

Nutrition

Students will learn aspects of nutrition as they apply to the developing child. They will study issues such as provincial licensing requirements, nutritional demands of young children and appropriate methods for meeting those demand in the preschool settings.

Administration 1

Students will examine issues related to the adminstrative role of an early childhood educator with an emphasis on professional and teamwork roles. They will address legal and professional issues with an emphasis on child protection. In addition, they will develop parent information packages.

ECED 1319 cr - 2

Block Practicum II and Seminar

Students will design, implement, and evaluate appropriate early childhood learning environments by integrating and consolidating knowledge from previous courses during a full time two week placement in an early childhood group setting. In addition, students will be expected to demonstrate effective care giving behaviours, professional behaviours, and ethical conduct.

ECED 1330

Child Growth & Development III

This course will focus on principles of child development from the preschool years through adolescence. Issues related to physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development will be highlighted. Emphasis will be on the preschool years.

Guiding and Caring for Young Children III

The purpose of this course will be to examine the development of self-esteem in young children.

Infant/Toddler Development

This course provides an ecological approach to detailed study in human development from prenatal through toddler-hood. Critical examination of current research relevant to factors which promote or hinder optimum infant and toddler development will be the focus of this course. Emerging new views in infant/toddler development will also be studied

ECED 2407

Infant and Toddler - Health, Safety and Nutrition

This course will focus on aspects of health, safety, and nutrition in infant and toddler settings. Issues relating to personal hygiene, emergency procedures, sick children, infection control, meal planning, toileting, and sleep arrangements will be examined.
Prerequisites: ECED Level I Certification and/or ECED Provincial Certification.

Infant Practicum

The student will have full day placements in infant childcare centres. The purpose of this time is to allow the student maximum opportunity to integrate all aspects of program planning for infants.

Administration II

This course will provide opportunities for students to examine issues related to the administrative role of a senior staff member. Management, personnel, financial and legal issues will be emphasized.

Program Planning for Infants and Toddlers

This course provides the students with opportunities to examine the role of the caregiver in relation to guiding, caring and program planning for infants and toddlers. Developing quality learning environments and facilitating parental involvement will be emphasized.

Families Needing Extra Support: Role of the Early Childhood Educator

In this course students will critically examine the role of the Early childhood Educator in working with families who need extra support. Processes for implementing a collaborative approach to responding to individual family needs will be examined. Current issues and research will also be considered.

Toddler Practicum

The student will have full day placements in toddler childcare centres. The purpose of this time is to allow the student maximum opportunity to integrate all aspects of program planning for toddlers.

Children with Exceptionalities

This course will proved to critically examine philosophies, policies and education of individuals with exceptionalities. Emphasis will be on the practice of caring, developmental issues, practices supportive of the whole child, and policies and practices that impact children who need extra supportive child care.

Children with Exceptionalities - Program Planning

Opportunities to critically examine caring practices, guidance strategies, and programming to meet the special needs of children with exceptionalities will be provided.
