Co-operative Education

Description

Co-operative Education formally integrates academic studies with paid, full-time work experiences in related positions with host employer organizations. The name reflects the co-operative relationship between the employer, student and Kwantlen University College. Kwantlen currently offers six Co-operative Education programs listed below.

There are many benefits for students who enroll in Co-op programs. Students gain practical work experience while earning a competitive wage to help finance their education. They get to explore their career choice, develop goals, and learn job searching and career success skills. They also learn to apply their skills and knowledge in the world of work. Co-op provides the opportunity for students to acquire extensive career-related work experience as well as a diploma or degree.

The Co-operative Education Department is responsible for coordinating Co-op work experiences. The Co-op Department works with employers to develop experiences that integrate the skills and knowledge acquired by students in their on-campus courses. Faculty from the department also perform site visits to evaluate the work experiences with both student and employer. The Co-op Department also provides a series of three mandatory employment skills and communications courses for students enrolled in Co-op diplomas. A series of non-credit employment skill workshops is offered for third year students in Co-op degree programs.

Students who enroll in Co-operative Education programs are required to pay additional tuition fees, check with the Admissions Office for more information.

Transferability of Work Terms

Work terms completed in any approved BC post-secondary Co-op program shall be transferable to any other BC post-secondary Co-op institution. The transferability is based on the work term(s) having been successfully completed and given credit by the institution of origin (i.e. noted on transcript). The granting of transfer is given by the institution accepting the student using the regular transfer credit process.

The acceptance of a student for transfer into another institution having a co-op program does not guarantee acceptance into the Co-op program at that institution.

An institution may still require that the transfer student complete additional work terms as part of his/her new program of study.
