Counselling and Advising

Counselling and Advising services are offered at all Kwantlen University College campuses. Services are offered by Educational Advisors, Disability Advisors, First Nations Education Coordinator, Learning Specialists and professional Counsellors to help students to make the best of their Kwantlen experience.

Educational Advising

Today's educational opportunities are many and complex. Selecting the right one can be difficult for students. Educational Advisors are available to provide and explain educational and occupational information to students engaged in weighing career alternatives. Advisors are also available to guide students in selecting and planning effective programs of studies for university transfer and career training programs through group coarse planning sessions and through individual consultation.

Counselling

Professional counsellors are available to help students with personal issues that interfere with academic performance. Assistance is provided in areas such as stress management, relationship problems, depression and concentration difficulties. Counsellors can help a student in crisis or make referrals for specialized help. Discussion of personal concerns is kept strictly confidential.

Counsellors can help students with career planning. Career Explorations Seminars are offered on all campuses. These 12 hour seminars include career testing, labour market information and decision making methods. If you need help making a vocational choice, you should consider the seminar or make an appointment with a counsellor.

Counsellors can help you develop the skills necessary for academic success. Success Skills Seminars are provided on all campuses and include topics such as time management, note-taking, reading textbooks and writing examinations. If you need to improve your study habits, sign-up for a seminar or make an appointment to discuss your situation.

There are two 3-credit courses called Career and Academic Success that are taught by counsellors. CAAS 1100attitudes fundamental to success at the post-secondary level. CAAS 1110job search skills.

Career Resource Centres

The Career Resource Centres in each campus Counselling and Advising area is a place where students, staff, faculty, and prospective students can obtain occupational, vocational and educational information. Calendars from a wide variety of universities, colleges, technical institutes, and other educational institutions are available.

Training requirements, job descriptions and occupational forecasts are also available. The centres are open on weekdays and some evenings.

First Nations Education

The First Nations Education Coordinator provides outreach to the aboriginal community and to aboriginal high school students in Kwantlen's region. Darlene J. Willier, the First Nations Education Coordinator, supports aboriginal students, provides information on Kwantlen programs and makes referrals to other student services. The Aboriginal Advisory Committee, an external advisory group, provides advice and support to Kwantlen. The Coordinator has offices at the Surrey and Richmond campuses. Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities who require classroom accommodations or other support services are requested to contact a Disability Advisor to discuss information on accessing programs and courses.

Individualized support is available depending on the nature of the disability. This may include interpreting, tutoring, note taking, taped books, large print photocopying, scribes, and exam support, etc.

Specialized services are also available through the Learning Specialists who provide screening assessments and learning strategies for students with learning disabilities and brain injuries.

Students with mental health disorders can receive additional assistance such as: quiet place to rest or take medications, beverages during class, contact person to talk with when anxious, part-time status with extensions to complete course work, leaves from courses during episodic illness and additional support as necessary.
