Description
This program prepares students for employment in the field of Early Childhood Education. Each term consistes of classroom work, as well as short and long term field placments in licensed daycares and preschools.
Admission Requirements
In addition to meeting Kwantlen's general admission requirements, applicants to the Certificate program must complete the following prerequisites before final acceptance into a program:
- An English 12 grade of C or higher or an exit grade of C or higher from ENGL 0099 or an ACPE 0090 grade of C or higher or KUC English Assessment Test placement or LPI Essay 25-35 or LPI Essay 24 + EU #6
- CAAT: minimum score: Comprehension -7;
vocabulary -5; composite -12- Attendance at an Orientation Meeting
- First Aid Certificate. As for example - St. John's Ambulance Standard First Aid, Canadian Red Cross Child Safe
- Criminal Record check. Valid three months prior to admission into the program.
Volunteer/Paid Work
A minimum of 90 hours of work with children is required. Hours may be completed in the following settings:
- Minimum of 60 hours in a licensed group care setting for 3-5 year old, supervised by a licensed early childhood educator in good standing.
- 30 hours may be completed in a community setting with children under the age of 12 (i.e. After school care, sports teams, Sunday school classes, Girl Guide movement, etc.)
A written evaluation of volunteer hours by the supervisor of the program addressing suitability and appropriateness for working with young children is required.
An interview and/or additional letters of reference may be required by the coordinator or designate.
Recommendations
Recommended immunization consistent with facility policy. It is recommended that all child care workers be up-to-date in their immunization against childhood illnesses, especially measles, mumps and rubella.
Content
This certificate program is offered over 3 semesters. Semester I will be from Sept.-Dec. Semester II will be offered from January to April/May and Semester III will be from Sept.-Dec. the following year. Upon successful completion of Semester III prerequisites, the student will complete a 2 week practicum in the following January.
The basic program has been designed so that some courses require prerequisites while others do not. Once students registered in the program have been accomodated, courses not requiring prerequisites may be available to individuals who are not enrolled in the entire program.
In general, the ECE program has three areas of focus:
Semester 1 has a theoretical focus primarily,Semester 2 has an application focus and,Semester 3 has an integration focus.Field experiences are a strong component of Semesters 2 and 3. In addition, block practicum experiences are scheduled at the end of each of Semesters 2 and 3 to provide a consolidated practice experience. The block practicum after Semester 3 will be in January of the following year.
Those individuals who have previous successful post-secondary experience may apply for exemption from the CAAS 1100 course, which is designed to facilitate success in post-secondary studies.

Students in the basic and EAL programs will spend approximately $4,100 for tuition, textbooks and course materials during the program. Students are also responsible for providing their own transportation to field placements and block practicum sites.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Certificate in Early Childhood Education.
A student who graduates with a certificate and successfully completes 500 hours work experience under a licensed early childhood educator will be eligible for registration with the Provincial Child Care Licensing Board and receive a license to practice as an Early Childhood Educator in the Province of British Columbia. This qualifies the graduate to work in licensed preschool and day-care centres.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Start date: January - 13 months
Description
This program is designed for students whose first language is not English, but who are able to work at an advanced EASL level. In addition to the early childhood course work, students also receive EASL instruction to enable them to effectively communicate in providing care to young children and their families.
This full-time program has been designed so that the students develop English language skills plus the knowledge and competencies to become an Early Childhood Educator in British Columbia. Field experiences are a strong component of the program to help students apply knowledge from the classroom in a consistent and timely manner.
This certificate program will be offered over 3 semesters. Semester 1 is January - May, semester 2 is May - September/October, and semester 3 is January - May. In addition, there will be two Block Practicum experiences, the first after Semester 2 and the second after Semester 3 to provide students with a consolidation practice experience in an early childhood setting.
In the first term of studies, students will focus on the development of English language skills plus theoretical knowledge related to Early Childhood Education. In the second term of studies, students will continue to develop English language skills plus begin applying specific programming during field experiences. In the final term of studies, the English language course becomes optional dependent on instructor advisement and the focus of studies is on the integration of knowledge, skills and abilities to help in the transition to a certified early childhood educator.

Description
This part-time program is offered in the evening, with some Saturday classes. Each citation has a full-time practicum component scheduled after all course work is complete. Both programs have courses common to each to prevent duplication of study for those wanting both citations. A regular schedule of offerings is available through the Admissions office. To enroll in the post-certificate programs, you need to have completed a Basic ECE program and provide proof of criminal record clearance. Prior to practicum placements, a criminal record clearance will be required. After acceptance into the program, you will receive further registration information with regard to individual course offerings. It is important you meet application deadlines as courses are not offered if there are insufficient applicants. For those students who do not take a course every semester, application for re-entry into the program is required. For practicum courses you will need to meet health requirements of the practicum site.
