Effective date of this calendar, unless otherwise indicated, is Sept. 1, 2001 to Aug. 31, 2002.
Description
The Horticulture Access program (HRTA) delivers technology level training to working students who wish to pursue their education on a part time basis. The courses in this program carry an HRTA designation, they are offered at a cost recovery rate ($200 - per credit) and are from 5 to 15 weeks in length. All HRTA courses run evenings and/or Saturdays. The curriculum is identical to that of the daytime program, therefore most course credits can be applied towards a Diploma in Horticulture Technology. Please see the Horticulture Technology program.
Student Profile
The typical HRTA student belongs to either one of these three client groups: the Career Seekers, the Serious Amateurs and the Job Enhancers.
The Career Seekers are individuals who either wish to explore horticulture as a career option or to work towards a credential in horticulture by taking one or two courses at a time.
The Serious Amateurs love horticulture as a hobby or wish to pursue it for the purpose of operating a small business. Typically, these students have grown beyond the basic horticultural workshops and seminars and wish to deepen their knowledge in areas such as Botany and Pest Management.
The Job Enhancers are employed in the horticulture industry. They use the HRTA courses to expand their knowledge and to further their chances for career enhancement. Many Job Enhancers are self-employed. The HRTA program provides them with the ability to broaden the services they provide for their clients.
Admission Requirements
The Horticulture Access program has no entry requirements. Students can choose the courses they wish to take and register at any one of Kwantlen's four Admissions Offices. To new students who have been out of school for a while, or did not complete grade 11 mathematics and science, we recommend that you begin with HRTA 0096, Mathematics for Horticulture, HRTA 0095, and Chemistry for Horticulture. Please note that some HRTA courses carry prerequisites.
Transfer
Many credits obtained through HRTA can be used to meet the graduation requirements for the one-year Horticulture Technician Certificate program or the two-year Horticulture Technology Diploma program. Please contact Nancy Train, Program Assistant - Horticulture Access Program at (604) 599 3308 for more information if you wish to pursue a credential in horticulture and have questions about the transferability of courses. Note: the number of credits granted towards a credential will depend on the program specialization chosen.
