Community Support Worker
Description
The Community Support Worker program educates people to support individuals with mental disabilities. This certificate program is offered over three (3) semesters. Semester 1 will be from September to December. Semester 2 will be from January to May and Semester 3 will be from September to December. The program will be offered full-time with a select number of seats available for part-time students. Each semester will have a theory and field practice component. The focus is on a community development model. Classes are held during the day.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the program are qualified to work in a variety of settings: residential, vocational and educational--that support people with mental disabilities. Job opportunities are plentiful.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the general Kwantlen University College requirements, the following specific prerequisites also apply to this program:
- English 12 with a C or better; or recent LPI score 23; or transferable College or University English or ACPE 0090 with a C grade or better.
- 100 hours or more of volunteer work within the last 18 months or current or previous employment within the last 24 months in the Human Services field.
- Two current reference letters of employment of volunteer work.
- Satisfactory medical assessment by a physician within 6 months prior to entry into the program.
- A valid St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid Course, or approved equivalent (2 day program).
- Personal career letter describing experiences, career interests and aspirations in the human services field.
- Documentation for the above requirements must be received at the Admissions Office by March 31.
- An acceptable Criminal Record Search completed within three months prior to entry into the program.
- An interview with the program coordinator will be required for final acceptance into the program.

Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Certificate in Community Support Worker.
