Kwantlen libraries provide a wide array of resources on all campuses designed to assist students both with course studies and to encourage self-directed, research and learning. Library resources are available to students, staff and faculty, as well as to community borrowers.

The purpose of the library is to enable students to learn more about the subjects which are formally taught at the institution as well as to help our users learn more about research and information retrieval. In order to fulfil this responsibility, the teaching library plays an integral part in the function of Kwantlen. No student graduates from Kwantlen without having had an opportunity to be trained in the techniques of information retrieval so important today.

Library Card

(Student Identification Card)

Your Library Card is also your Student Identification Card. A Library Card can be obtained at your campus library at any time during normal library hours, once your are registered for the current term. The Library Card/Student ID must be presented at all Student Association-sponsored activities and must be presented when you are signing out all library materials. In addition, it may be used as photo identification when picking up grade statements, transcripts or other documents from the Office of the Registrar. The Library Card is permanent and must be updated each semester. If the card is lost please notify the library immediately.

Finding Your Way Around

The program of library instruction includes Research Skills classes and tours for all new students. Reference librarians are available at all campus libraries to assist individuals and to teach the skills with which to use libraries effectively. Information on library services as well as instructional materials are also available on the Library's Home Page.

Loan Periods

Most print materials are loaned for a two-week period with the exception of magazines and reference books, which must remain in the Library. On load materials may be renewed if not requested by another borrower. Some materials are also placed on short-term reserve for students' convenience.

Requests and Recalls

Kwantlen operates a request and recall system, which gives users access to materials on all campuses.

Charges

Fines will be charged for overdue reserve material and for overdue materials that have been recalled. Overdue fines or failure to pay for lost materials may result in the withholding of student transcripts and credentials, in the suspension of library privileges, and also may prevent registration for courses.

Materials from Other Institutions

A library card may be used to obtain borrowing privileges at some BC Community Colleges. An inter-library loan network allows access to the collections of all post-secondary institutions in the province, including SFU, UBC, and UVic.

Some Facts and Figures

The present collection includes more than 142,000 catalogued items of both print and non-print materials and over 580 magazine titles. The entire collection is listed in a union catalogue, which can be searched on computer workstations at each campus. Access to the Internet is also possible from these library workstations.

The library acquires, circulates and maintains print and non-print materials and equipment. However, the Instructional and Educational Technology Department does all audiovisual production. Multi-purpose learning labs are operated at Langley, Surrey, and Richmond campus libraries. The PC'S may be used for library instruction, searching the Library catalogue and Library Home Page, searching the Internet, email or word processing.

The majority of Kwantlen's film and video collection is housed at the Surrey campus. Kwantlen is a member of the Media Exchange Cooperative (a media cooperative of post-secondary institutions in BC), and a MEC Catalogue is searchable at each campus library via the Electronic Library Network. Booking of media may be arranged by contacting the Audiovisual Services Assistant at each campus.

The library houses a number of collections that supplement the book, magazine and media collections. The pamphlet, government document, and map collections provide unique information difficult to obtain in the general collection.

The library also houses the archives, which contains printed materials pertaining to the history and development of Kwantlen.
