Human Service Worker


Community Support Worker

Offered at Langley

Full Time - 3 semesters

Description

The Community Support Worker program educates workers to support individuals with mental disabilities. This twelve (12) month certificate program is offered over three (3) semesters. Semester 1 will be from September to December. Semester 2 will be from January to April/May, and Semester 3 will be from September to December. The program will be offered full-time with a select number of seats available for day part-time students. Each semester will have theory and field practice components that focus on a community development model.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program are qualified to work in a variety of settings (residential, vocational and educational) that support people with mental disabilities.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the general Kwantlen University College requirements, the following specific prerequisites apply to this program:

  • English 12 with a C or better; or recent LPI score 23; or transferable College or University English or ( ACPE 0091 or ABEE 0091 or PSPE 1091) with a C grade or better.
  • 50 hours or more of volunteer work within the last 18 months or current or previous employment in the Human Services field within the last 24 months
  • Two current reference letters of employment or volunteer work.
  • Satisfactory medical assessment by a physician within 6 months prior to entry into the program.
  • A valid St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid Course, or approved equivalent (2 day program).
  • Personal career letter describing experiences, career interests and aspirations in the human services field.
  • Documentation for the above requirements must be received at the Admissions Office by March 31.
  • An acceptable Criminal Record Search completed within three months prior to entry into the program.
  • An interview with the program coordinator will be required for final acceptance into the program.

Graduation

Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Certificate in Community Support Worker.

Subject to approval: Community Support Worker program will offer a diploma semester in January 2003.
