Interdisciplinary Design Studies

Offered at Richmond Campus-
Start Date: September
Full- and Part-time
Certificate
Description
Based on the four cornerstones of exploration, self-diagnosis, transition and fundamental skill development, the Interdisciplinary Design Studies (IDDS) program offers students the opportunity to develop the fundamental knowledge and skills common to the field of design and its diverse disciplines and to explore and assess educational and career options.
The IDDS program encompasses diversities of thought, philosophy, values, and learning styles. The curriculum emphasizes personal development, creative problem solving and critical thinking.
Various goals of the IDDS program include:
  • broaden knowledge of the options, opportunities and requirements within the field of design and its various disciplines
  • encourage informed choices regarding future studies and career paths
  • broaden knowledge and understanding of the theories, methodologies and processes common to all disciplines of design
Student Profile
The IDDS program offers a comprehensive introduction to design studies and practice that is particularly appropriate for:
Graduates of Secondary School
  • Students interested in a career in the field of design but who have not yet determined which discipline would suit them best.
  • Students who have decided on a specific career path but need to expand their foundational skills and improve their portfolio as a means of gaining access to further design studies.
Current post-secondary students
  • Students in Marketing, Business, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, Fine Arts, Social Sciences/Humanities and/or other design programs wishing to complement and broaden their knowledge and skills in an interdisciplinary environment.
Graduates of post-secondary programs
  • Recent graduates from any discipline seeking to complement their studies in an interdisciplinary learning environment, which stresses integration, collaboration and synthesis.
Mature students
  • Mature students seeking a transitional program where they can explore career and educational opportunities in design.
  • Mature students, working professionals, and Art/Design Educators interested in complementing and enhancing their professional development in areas such as creative problem solving, critical and contextual thinking and visualization capabilities.
Admission Application
Applicants are encouraged to apply early.
The centre for Applied Design and Communications hosts several information sessions through out the year to inform the public about programs of study, new developments, emerging degrees, deadlines to apply etc.
Please call Admissions at 604.599.2512 to enquire about the next information session as well as answers to questions you may have.
Admission Requirements
1. Applicants are required to meet an English proficiency requirement of a minimum of ‘C’ grade in English 12 or equivalent prior to registering for courses. In addition to ‘C’ in English 12, the following achievements can be used to meet this requirement:
  • ‘C’ in Communications 12 or TPC 12, or 213 cb-TOEFL with Writing Band 4.5, or
  • minimum achievement of Level 4 on the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) with a score of 26 on the Essay, or
  • Kwantlen placement test in ENGL 1099 or (ABEE 0091 or PSPE 1091) or EASL 0085.
Note: admission requirements to IDDS may differ from other programs or courses.
2. Submission of transcripts of secondary and/or post-secondary education including Art, Design and Academic courses. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) of design-related experience is available.
3. Submission of a broad portfolio of work (10-15 pieces), which might include:
  • basic 2D and/or 3D Design (for example: projects representing design courses and/or design-related work experience);
  • basic 2D and/or 3D fine art projects including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, sculpture, colour studies etc.;
  • design-related projects including typography, layout, drafting, C.A.D., video production, copywriting, computer design etc.;
  • photography including black/white and colour;
  • marketing, business and/or public relations plans.
Note: any pieces too large to transport easily, can be photographed as prints or slides. Admissions will notify you of the exact date for portfolio submission. For out of town applicants who cannot submit their portfolio in person, alternate arrangements must be made. The IDDS program needs to retain your portfolio for 2-3 days, so if you are applying to more than one program or institution, it is your responsibility to coordinate your portfolio submissions.
4. A written statement reflecting personal goals, education and career goals (if possible) and what interests you about the field of design.
Timing of the Portfolio Review/Selection Process
The portfolio review/selection process for entry into the IDDS program generally takes place at the end of May for:
  • students who are applying directly into the IDDS program and
  • students who are unable to qualify for a design degree or diploma program and are looking for an opportunity to begin their design studies.*
* It is strongly recommended that students, who are applying for a design degree or diploma at Kwantlen, also apply to the IDDS program. Indicate both programs on your application form. Your date of application will apply to both programs.
