Access Programs for People with
Disabilities
(Formerly Adult Special Education)

Description
The goal of the Access Programs for People with Disabilities
department is to provide post-secondary education for adults with
various disabilities. This program will help students to enhance
their independence and employability skills.
Employment Potential
The APPD program at Kwantlen University College is designed to
maximize social skills and employment opportunities for students
with disabilities. With instruction and training, students can realize
their career and personal potential.
Admission Requirements
Adults (18 and older) with a defined disability
Assessment prior to entry to determine appropriate program options and eligibility
Complete Access Programs for People with Disabilities application
Attend intake interviews
Some Vocational Skills Training options require various
prerequisites prior to acceptance.
Students may enter the Career Awareness and Job Preparation
programs on a continuous entry basis. The Vocational Skills
Training program runs for ten months starting September of each
year.
Students pay a one-time application fee to Kwantlen, plus a
moderate tuition fee. In some cases, various government ministries
may pay a portion of these costs.
Career Awareness
This program is designed to provide information to students about
work opportunities available for adults with disabilities, and
combines job-oriented classroom instruction with a work
experience component.
Career Awareness is a one-year program with the possibility of
extension if the student has nearly completed graduation
requirements.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded
a Certificate of Completion.
Job Preparation
This program is designed to meet the vocational needs of adults
with disabilities who are seeking competitive employment., and
includes both employment oriented classroom activities and a work
experience component.
Job Preparation is a one-year program with the possibility of
extension if the student has nearly completed graduation
requirements.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded
a Certificate of Completion.
Vocational Skills Training
The Vocational Skills Training Program (VST) is designed to
provide specific skills training and work experiences related to
those skills. The options offered at present include: Automotive
Assistant, Food Services Assistant, Clerical Assistant, and Childcare
Aide. Options under consideration include Light Warehousing
Assistant, Janitorial Assistant, and Automotive Detailing Assistant.
VST: Childcare Aide Option (APPD0210)
Applicants must participate in a structured screening process in
which experience in a childcare setting, documentation, criminal
record search, and references will be assessed. Note that students
registered in this option must also be enrolled in the Family
Childcare Program at Kwantlen University College.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this option, students are awarded a
VST Certificate of Completion, and a Family Childcare Statement
of Completion. Students will also complete a Childsafe First Aid
course and receive the appropriate certificate.
VST: Automotive Assistant Option (APPD 0220)
Applicants must participate in a structured screening process in
which experience in an automotive setting, documentation, Class
7(N) minimum driver's license, and references will be assessed.
Note that students registered in this option must also be enrolled
halftime in Kwantlen's Automotive Service Technician Program
(AMCH) and complete assigned modules.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this option, students are awarded a
VST Certificate of Completion - Automotive Assistant and will
receive credit from completed AMCH modules. Students will also
complete the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
training (WHMIS) as well as Basic First Aid, and will receive the
appropriate certificates.
VST: Clerical Assistant Option (APPD 0230)
Applicants must participate in a structured screening process in
which experience in a clerical setting, documentation, and
references will be assessed. Note that students registered in this
option must also be enrolled in ABTY 1125 and ABTY 1145.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this option, students are awarded a
VST Certificate of Completion - Clerical Assistant, and will earn
credits for the above ABTY courses.
VST: Food Services Assistant Option (APPD 0250)
Applicants must participate in a structured screening process in
which experience in a food services setting, documentation, and
references will be assessed.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this option, students are awarded a
VST Certificate of Completion - Food Service Assistant. Students
will also complete the WHMIS (see above), Basic First Aid, and
Foodsafe courses and will receive the appropriate certificates.
Other Information
Job placement assistance is provided to employable Kwantlen
University College students requiring assistance to find and
maintain employment. The service in Surrey and Langley is funded
by the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development
Canada (HRSDC) and is available to community members with a
disability as well.
