English Language Studies

Offered at Richmond and Surrey Campus
Start date: September, January and May
Limited Enrolment
The English Language Studies Department offers three types of classes for students of English as an additional language:

English Language Proficiency Diploma

(Academic English)

Please note: Students interested in pursuing English studies via the English Language Studies Diploma option (ELST), must apply separately for this program. Please contact admissions.
This diploma program focuses on academic English. It provides full or part-time intensive English language study for students whose first language is not English and who intend to enroll in university studies or career and professional programs. There are four levels of study: the Foundation level (Intermediate), Level 1 (Upper Intermediate), Level 2 (Lower Advanced), and Level 3 (Advanced). The core curriculum (reading, writing, listening and speaking) is augmented by electives. At Level 2, students may begin graduated entry into university studies or career and professional programs. Courses in this diploma program are also open to non- program students. Please see the ELST section for course descriptions.

General English (ENLT)

General English courses are designed for ESL students who wish to develop practical communication skills—including speaking, listening, reading and writing—for everyday use and for professional purposes. Courses range from intermediate to advanced levels. Please see the ELST and/or the ENLT sections for course descriptions.

English Language Services for Adults (ELSA)

ELSA classes are for newcomers to Canada. These are free classes provided by the provincial government. In these classes, students learn about Canada and develop practical English language skills for living in Canada. Please note that Canadian citizens are not eligible for this program. Students should apply at the following CLBA ELSA Testing Centres:
For classes in Surrey, contact Timeline Date Solutions, #200 – 7525 King George Highway, Surrey, V3W 5A8, telephone: 604.507.4150.
For classes in Richmond, contact Western ESL Services, #208 - 2525 Commercial Dr., Vancouver, BC, V5N 4C1, telephone: 604.876.5756.

Admission Requirements

General Kwantlen admission requirements apply. In addition, applicants are generally required to do the appropriate English language placement tests unless they can produce valid test scores of such standardized tests as TOEFL, TSE, and/or IELTS. For accurate placement, all applicants are strongly advised to take the appropriate placement tests.
