Graduate Nurse Refresher
Offered at Surrey Campus
Start date: Monthly
Limited Enrolment
Description
This individualized, self-paced Graduate Nurse program is
designed to meet the needs of nurses who wish to refresh their
knowledge and skills in preparation for either returning to active
practice or for practicing in an acute or sub-acute environment.
Career Opportunities
This program prepares the graduate to practice nursing by meeting
the refresher course requirement for registration with the RNABC.
Once registered, nurses are prepared to work in a variety of areas
including medical-surgical units, and long-term care facilities
throughout BC. Some nurses who have previous experience may
work in specialty areas such as pediatrics, maternal-child, mental
health as well as in the community.
This program also prepares nurses to move into an acute or sub-
acute environment from long term care.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Current registration with RNABC, or eligible for nurse registration in BC. with or without a refresher course;
English language assessment if initial nursing education program was not in Canada (written TOEFL 550 or Computer TOEFL 213, SLEP 61, TSE 50);
An interview with the Program Coordinator or designate may be required.
Course Requirements
Prior to enrolling in GNUR 1210 applicants must meet the following requirements:
CPR certificate - Level C certificate. CPR certification must remain current throughout the course.
Immunizations consistent with the requirements of clinical agencies.
A criminal record search completed six months prior to registering for the program.
A criminal record check is required by the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia prior to registration as a nurse and is a pre-practice requirement of some of the clinical agencies used during the program. Any costs related to having this check done are the responsibility of the individual student. The Registered Nurses Association may refuse to register any person who has been convicted of an indictable offence. Applicants with any criminal convictions should request advice from the Associate Dean of Community and Health Studies at Kwantlen, or from the Registrar of the Registered Nurses Association before making formal application for admission to the program.
Clinical Agency Requirements: Some agencies may require students to take an Oath of Confidentiality. If any practice experience agencies require proof of current immunizations, all costs and responsibilities associated with these are the responsibility of the individual students. Failure to have documentation acceptable to the agency at the time of placement may mean denial of the experience, which in turn will prevent completion of the program of studies.

The program admits students on a monthly basis. When studying
full time, the student can complete the Theory course in five to six
months and the Preceptorship course in a minimum of 160 hours.
