Description
The facilities at the Langley Campus have been designed to
accommodate music instruction in chamber music, orchestral,
band, choral, and solo performance.
Intake occurs once a year in September for full-time program
students. It is expected that most students will enrol in a full-time
program, but part-time participation will be allowed subject to the
fulfillment of the course admission requirements and seat
availability. Credit for courses completed at other institutions may
be transferred subject to the approval of the music chair. As well,
first time registration for some courses may be allowed in January
subject to the approval of the music chair and fulfillment of any
course prerequisite(s).
Private Lesson
Students may major in one of the following: piano, voice, strings,
woodwinds, brass, guitar, or percussion. Lessons are generally
available only to students enrolled full-time in the Certificate in
Music or the Diploma in Music programs.
Music Foundation Certificate
Admission Requirements
All applicants must meet Kwantlen’s general admission
requirements. Applications for the Music Certificate program will
be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with placement into
the appropriate ensemble and private instruction by interview and/
or audition. Candidates are encouraged to complete the interview at
the scheduled time in April and May. If seats are available,
additional interviews may be held in June and/or August.
Content
The Music Foundation Certificate is a one-year, two-semester
program totaling 30 credits. By giving a thorough grounding in the
essential elements of music history theory, aural musicianship and
rhythm skills, and performance, the program provides a firm base
upon which to build musical skills. A core curriculum is
supplemented by music and/or academic electives chosen by the
student in consultation with a faculty advisor.

Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded
a Certificate in Music.
University Transfer Diploma
Admission Requirements
All applicants must meet Kwantlen’s general admission
requirements. In addition, applicants must meet the admission
requirements of the Music Department. These will include an
audition/interview and a placement examination in music theory.
Auditions are held in April, May, late June, and August subject to
seat availability. For piano, the minimum entrance standard is
Grade 10 RCMT or equivalent. The minimum entrance standard
for all other instruments and voice is Grade 6 RCMT or equivalent.
Any student currently enrolled in the Certificate in Music program
who wishes to enter the Diploma program must successfully
complete an audition. Audition and/or interview will determine
ensemble placement.
Content
The University Transfer Diplomas in Music are two-year, four-
semester programs totaling 60 - 74 credits. Each concentration is
designed to help students develop their abilities in both academic
and applied studies. All students receive four years of private
instruction on their chosen instrument and participate in a large
ensemble each semester. The core curriculum is augmented by
electives chosen by the student in consultation with a faculty
advisor.
English Requirement
Post-secondary level English is required for completion of the
Diploma in Music.
Diploma Concentrations
There are three concentrations within the University Transfer
Music Programs: Diploma in Music – General Studies; Diploma in
Music–Comprehensive Studies; Diploma in Music–Performance.
Diploma in Music—General Studies
Description
This concentration provides a broad education in music, integrating
theoretical, historical, and performance studies while enabling
students to master the skills needed for a wide array of professions.
The core curriculum consists of 30 credits that the student
supplements with a further 30 credits drawn from music and/or
academic electives. Through a careful choice of electives, this
concentration can lead to further study in liberal arts, music
therapy, music education, business and arts management.
Students in this concentration can gain entry to the third year of the

Diploma in Music—Comprehensive Studies
Description
This concentration provides a solid foundation in the academic,
theoretical, and practical areas of music. The 68-credit curriculum
includes all courses necessary for transfer into a Bachelor of Music
degree program. Graduates can go on to further studies in the fields
of music theory, composition, history, education or the arts in
general.

Description
The performance concentration is designed for students who plan
to enter the field of performance on their instrument upon
completion of a Bachelor of Music degree and/or graduate study.
Graduates in performance may also pursue careers in teaching
(university, conservatory, private studio). Requirements vary
depending on the student’s instrument.

Transfer
Any student planning to transfer to a university, conservatory or
other post-secondary institution should be aware that the transfer
of credits from Kwantlen to another institution is at the discretion
of the receiving institution. Students should consult with the
appropriate university, conservatory or other post-secondary
institution regarding transferability of courses. Students should be
aware that some universities do not grant transfer credit for courses
that have been challenged at other institutions or granted credit
through Prior Learning Assessment.
