Design Fundamentals I
This course introduces the student to floral design styles, and provides a foundation for development in floral design skills through an understanding of design elements, principles, and colour theory. Specialty design areas will also be introduced, including topics such as: wedding work, sympathy expressions, and floral etiquette for all occasions.
Design Laboratory I
This course will develop design skills and knowledge, with emphasis on construction and techniques, according to the elements and principles of design. Current trends in design styles will be practiced, focusing on linear and round form development
Flower Shop Operations I
This course will provide an overview of the day-to-day operation of a flower shop, including an examination of trade organizations and wire services. The Chain of Life and the most successful methods of receiving and storing floral products will also be studied.
Plant ID and Product Knowledge I
The student will receive an introduction to basic botany in this course, including plant structure, anatomy and reproduction. Cultivated floral materials and popular plants will be researched, according to classification, botanical and common names, maintenance and cultural requirements. Students shall be examined under the provision of the Pesticide Control Act for pesticide dispenser certification and are required to successfully complete the examination to be given credit for the course.
Work Experience I
After an initial six week period of orientation at Kwantlen, students will have the opportunity to work one full week, then one day per week for the remainder of the semester in a floral business, further developing and testing the skills they have acquired in the classroom. This joint effort between industry and Kwantlen combines a strong, unique training ground for the student with experience in a real world situation. Students and trainers will keep records of tasks, degree of accuracy and of professional development.
Design Fundamentals II
This course will continue the study and application of the elements and principles of design, such as composition, texture and form. Each component will be researched and explored to determine its relationship to the design process.

Design Laboratory II
In this course, students will learn various design styles emerging from geometric form, and begin a study of vegetative and experimental floral concepts. Students will learn to create these projects in a competent and efficient manner.

Flower Shop Operations II
The elements and principles of display and visual merchandising will be explored in this course, as they relate to interior, exterior, window and flower cooler displays. Signage and promotion will be studied, as well as an introduction to prop and fixture design and construction. Students will use display windows on campus to create exciting visual concepts. Sales techniques and customer relations will also be included.

Plant ID and Product Knowledge II
Practical work in the Kwantlen greenhouse will enhance the study of plants and their care requirements. Plant maintenance will be studied and practiced, as well as identification of plant pests. Additional plant and floral materials will be researched in depth.

Work Experience II
Second term students will train two days per week in a florist operation. This will permit additional hands-on experience and supplement classroom learning. It will also provide the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and concepts. Students and trainers will keep records of tasks performed, degree of accuracy and professional development.
