This individualized, self-paced Graduate Nurse program is designed to meet the needs of nurses who wish to refresh their knowledge and skills in preparation for either returning to active practice or for practicing in an acute or sub-acute environment.
Length of Program: 12 months part-time (for Registered nurses who have been out of practice for 5 years or more) 3– 5 months part-time (Acute – for Registered nurses who have been out of practice less than 5 years).
This program prepares the graduate to practice nursing by meeting the re-entry course requirement for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of BC (CRNBC). Once registered, nurses are prepared to work in a variety of areas including medical-surgical units, and long-term care facilities. Nurses who have previous experience may work in areas such as pediatrics, maternal-child, mental health or community health.
This program also prepares nurses to move into an acute or subacute environment from long-term care.
In addition to the general Kwantlen University College admission requirements, applicants must meet the following:

Current registration with CRNBC, or eligible for nurse registration in BC with or without a re -entry course

English language assessment if initial nursing education program was not in Canada (written TOEFL 550 or Computer TOEFL 213, SLEP 61, TSE 50)

An interview with the program coordinator or designate may be required
Prior to enrolling in GNUR 1210 applicants must meet the following requirements:

CPR Certificate - Level C. CPR certification must remain current throughout the course.

Immunizations consistent with the requirements of clinical agencies.

A criminal record search completed six months prior to registering for the course.
- Some Clinical agencies may require students to take an Oath of Confidentiality. If any practice experience agencies require proof of current immunizations, all costs and responsibilities associated with these are the responsibility of the individual students. Failure to have documentation acceptable to the agency at the time of placement may mean denial of the experience, which in turn will prevent completion of the program of studies.
The program admits students on a monthly basis. When studying full time, the student can complete the Theory component in five to six months and the Preceptorship course in a minimum of 160 hours.
CRNBC entry-level competencies, and theory provides the framework for the study materials. The topics of study have been divided into two categories.

Theory A
Theory A modules include: nursing theory and conceptual model; health promotion; nursing process; community health.

Theory B
Theory B modules include: introduction to health assessment; physiology; pharmacology; interpersonal aspects; growth and development; professional responsibilities; mathematical skills.

Theory C
Theory C modules include: degenerative process, cell aberration; infectious process; perioperative nursing; congenital and metabolic disorders; immunology; separation; and mental health.
These are designed to facilitate adaptation of the student to a new or changing work environment. The modules include: mental health disorders, oncology, gerontology, home care, pediatrics, obstetrics and trauma. Each student is required to study gerontology and home care.
The student determines the sequence in which the modules will be completed and multiple choice examinations are written at the university college.
The student attends a series of labs and workshops. Preparation for this includes on-line work.
Students are required to complete a skills test prior to commencing their clinical placement.
In addition to tuition fees, students will spend up to approximately $1,500 for textbooks, course materials, uniforms, etc., for the entire program. Students are also responsible for providing their own transportation to the clinical experience.
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Citation in Graduate Nurse.
