Course Description
This course is for both Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Learners will increase their knowledge and acquire strategies as a nurse working within a healthcare team, to establish effective communication in a professional setting. They will apply critical thinking skills and sound decision making as part of the simulation activities for patient teaching. Learners will also learn to establish therapeutic rapport with clients and families, recognizing and honoring diversity and cultural awareness. Emphasis is placed on personal awareness of self as a communicator, and impact on others. Concepts of empathy, various styles of communication for effective interactions, boundary setting, conflict de-escalation and resolution are examined and reviewed. Violence and bullying in the workplace are also explored through case scenarios in a simulated setting. A variety of learning activities will be utilized to maximize effective communication strategies for the workplace using case scenarios and role plays.

Course Format
This is an onsite course offered only at KPU’s Cloverdale Campus. This course is delivered over 3 full days and learners are required to attend all days and fully participate in class to achieve mastery, there are no exceptions. Learners should expect to spend approximately twenty four hours (24) in the classroom over three (3) days and an additional three (3) hours of self-guided learning activities to prepare prior to class.

Course Grade
Successful grade for this course is Mastery
Learners who are not successful in PNUR 9120, Professional Communications may attempt the course for a second time. Learners requesting a second attempt are required to seek permission from our office, in writing. Learners are advised to contact their Canadian Nursing Regulatory Body for advisement if they are not successful after a second attempt. No exceptions. Please note, there is no appeal mechanism within KPU for students receiving non-mastery.
Entrance Requirements
To be eligible to register, applicants must have one of the following:
- Completion of KPU Competency Assessment and Enhancement for Nurses’ (CAEN) assessment
- A letter or email referral from Canadian Nursing Regulatory Body
- Current nursing licensure
