Metal Fabrication

CITATION IN METAL FABRICATION

DESCRIPTION

Metal Fabrication is the interpretation of technical drawings and layout of metal components, cutting and shaping of those components, through to assembly and welding or fastening to create the finished product. Students will develop the necessary habits concerning safety and the proper use of time, machinery, materials, and the work skills required to be a competent trades person in today’s workforce.

Students who complete the Entry Level Trades Training (ELTT) are eligible for credit for first year apprenticeship technical training.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of Kwantlen’s Metal Fabrication Program are well prepared to meet the demands of industry. They will be prepared to enter an apprenticeship or work as a junior Metal Fabricator in areas of structural steel, heavy equipment, machinery manufacturing, mining, petro-chemical, transportation and marine industries.

STUDENT PROFILE

The program attracts both high school and mature students. PLA or transfer credit can be given to the students with previous post-secondary training.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students must meet either the regular student admission category or the mature student admission category in addition to the following:

  • Reading and math skills at a Grade 10 level as assessed by Kwantlen. Applicants who lack this level of skills may upgrade their skills through Kwantlen’s Academic and Career Preparation department

  • Interview with instructor

Students with mental or physical impairments who may require program or practicum accommodations, should contact the Program Coordinator at 604.599.3017 to discuss required skills and competencies, and a Disability Advisor at 604.599.3233 to ensure appropriate accommodations can be arranged.

CONTENT
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

Students will require appropriate personal safety equipment, including steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses, safety gloves, welding gloves, respirator (silicone half-mask type with cartridges for organic vapours and particulate filters) and cotton coveralls.

GRADUATION

Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a Citation in Metal Fabrication and a Metal Fabricator’s Logbook.
