General Business Studies Certificate
DESCRIPTION
The one-year General Business Studies Certificate Program is designed to provide you with a broad range of fundamental business skills and an understanding of the business environment. Many classes are offered in the evening to accommodate part-time studies. Completion time may be extended up to a maximum of ten years.
On completion of the required courses for this certificate, you can receive credit toward a two year career-oriented diploma program at Kwantlen. In addition, all courses may be applied for full credit toward any of the following Kwantlen Business Degrees:
- Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Entrepreneurial Leadership
- Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Human Resource Management
Most of the courses included in this program are also transferable to other universities and colleges (please refer to the BC Transfer Guide at www.bctransferguide.ca regarding the transfer status of courses to specific institutions).
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students wishing to complete the program without having to undertake any preparatory courses must enter with English 12 with a B grade or better, or equivalent.
CONTENT
Students must take a total of nine foundation courses and one elective:
- Accounting (ACCT 1110 or 2293)*
- Business (BUSI 1110 or 1215)*
- Two Computer Business Systems courses (CBSY 1105 and one other CBSY)
- Economics (ECON 1101 or 1150)*
- Marketing (MRKT 1199)
- Mathematics (or ACCT 1130 or BUQU 1130)1
- Applied Communications (CMNS 1140) or
English (ENGL 1100)* - Statistics (or ACCT 1230 or BUQU 1230)2
- One elective from any of the above disciplines
*Note: ACCT 2293, BUSI 1215, ECON 1150 and ENGL 1100 are recommended for students who intend to pursue both a diploma and BBA degree at Kwantlen in future.

Normal Course Progression (Full-Time)
This sample schedule will assist students who wish to complete the General Business Studies Certificate Program in one year. Although this schedule is highly recommended, course registration is subject to availability. Students may choose to take some courses out of sequence and create alternate timetables that still meet the certificate requirements.

- ACCT 1230 Business Statistics or BUQU 1230 Business Statistics (see above note)
- CBSY 2205 Computers and Information Processing (*Course title will change to Management Information Systems as of May 2010)
- MRKT 1199 Introduction to Marketing
- ACCT 1110 Principles of Accounting I*
- OR
- ACCT 2293 Intro. to Financial Accounting*
- One Elective – An approved business liberal education elective from www.kwantlen.ca/calendar/courses/lbedcrs/libeduelec.html or University level course
*Note: ACCT 2293, BUSI 1215, ECON 1150 and ENGL 1100 are required for students who intend to pursue both a diploma and BBA degree at Kwantlen in future.
*For Graduation Purposes only:
- credit will NOT be granted for ACCT 1110 or ACCT 1210 if credit has been previously granted for ACCT 2293
- credit will NOT be granted for ACCT 2293 if credit has previously been granted for ACCT 1110 and ACCT 1210
GRADUATION
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be awarded a Certificate in General Business Studies.
