Graduation
Fine Arts offers a two-year Fine Arts Diploma Program (Associate in Fine Arts) and a one-year Foundation Certificate Program. Both are designed to enable students to acquire a solid foundation in the basic skills of visual arts. Selected courses and groups of courses within the program may be applied to university transfer credit in Fine Arts and Education (see Kwantlen's transfer guide).
The 60 transferable credits for the diploma may be accumulated on a full or part-time basis. 30 transferable credits are required for the certificate program.
In order to receive a diploma, students are required to accumulate a minimum of 60 credits, of which 54 must be in Fine Arts. Upon successful completion of this program students are awarded a Diploma in Fine Arts.
Description
The Fine Arts Foundation Certificate is a self-contained one-year program, which allows students to continue in Fine Arts or apply for programs such as Applied Design, Graphics and Visual Design, Interior Design or Fashion Design. Credits are transferable to other art schools or universities.
The foundation year is a program of related courses concerned with the fundamentals of visual art and visual communication. It provides a period of study, exploration and intense development of ideas and techniques. During this year students will study both two-dimensional and three-dimensional aspects of the fundamentals common to Fine and Applied Arts.
Admission Requirements
General Kwantlen admission requirements apply. Entry requirements for all levels of ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography and design include an ability to demonstrate an understanding of the use of hazardous machinery, equipment and materials in adherence with WHMIS safety procedures.

The foundation year is also the first year of the Diploma and the courses are identical in both programs.

Upon completion of the two-year diploma program at Kwantlen, graduates will have acquired expressive skills in a wide range of media. With these skills students can continue to develop their creative potential individually or at an institution of further learning.

Priority Registration
Students wishing to complete the Fine Arts Diploma in two years can apply for the Priority Registration option. 20 students will be accepted for this option. These students must commit to registering for a full course load (5 courses) per semester and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Priority registration will be granted to these 20 students. Admission to this option will be based on a successful portfolio presentation and interview conducted in early May. Entry will be for the fall semester.
Applicants must telephone the Fine Arts coordinator (604) 599-2220, (v-mail 9134) before the end of April to arrange to deliver their portfolio to the department. A team of fine art instructors will review the portfolios. The department will telephone applicants if they are to be interviewed.
Your portfolio should consist of a maximum of 20 pieces. A sketchbook is an important element to include, as it is indicative of how your creative process works. Choose works that reflect a diversity of techniques and subject matter. For example, your selections may include drawings, paintings, sculptures, design, printmaking photographs, ceramics, video, etc. It is not necessary for the work to be mounted. Works that are too large or fragile to transport can be documented with slides.
Content
The recommended program for the first year of the diploma is the same as the foundation certificate. One of the electives will form the basis for the student's major in second year.
A major is defined as any three sequential semesters of study in a specific subject area.

For further information contact a faculty advisor. Students are encouraged to take both terms of any given discipline (i.e. both Drawing I and II) to facilitate effective university transfer status.
