Students who complete a full program of 30 credits, are awarded a Certificate in Interdisciplinary Design Studies
Description
A comprehensive education in fundamental design theories, methods, and history which may assist students to prepare for entry into more advanced study areas. Kwantlen's curriculum emphasizes a synthesis of personal development, interdisciplinary activities, and collaborative process.
Student Profile
Students in the Interdisciplinary Design Studies program represent a mix of recent high school graduates and mature students who have prior secondary and/or post-secondary preparation in art and/or design courses. Given the anticipated mix of student backgrounds and requirements and the limited number of seats available in the program it is anticipated that some students will attend IDDS on a part-time basis.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the regular Kwantlen entrance requirements admission to the Interdisciplinary Design Studies program has the following requirements:
- Applicants must satisfy the Language Proficiency requirements of the discipline specific program for which they are applying.
- Applicants must attend an interview with the IDDS faculty and/or one of the Applied Design programs.
- Applicants must support the application and interview with a portfolio of art and design related work and/or a rationale detailing why and how IDDS courses would complement studies undertaken in other disciplines.
- Transcripts detailing educational background in secondary, post-secondary and/or Continuing Education programs. Transcripts should be available at personal interviews.
Goals of the Curriculum
- a) promote creative and practical problem-solving skills
- b) develop capabilities for critical thinking and analysis
- c) establish competence in basic communication skills and techniques
- d) enhance conceptualization and visualization capabilities
- e) develop an understanding of design methodologies and processes
- f) establish an understanding and appreciation of the application of the elements and principles of design
- g) encourage the imaginative use of essential media and materials
- h) broaden knowledge and understanding of design-related history, theory, and philosophy
- i) broaden knowledge of the options, opportunities, and requirements within the various design fields
