Child Growth and Development I

This course will introduce the student to the study of human development. It will begin by looking at some cultural, socioeconomic and historical contexts that affect development as well as the innate and environmental factors that help shape a child's development. Three developmental processes -bio-social domain, intellectual domain and psychosocial domain will be identified. Students will be presented with the most current research about the beginning of human development, the period from conception until birth. Issues related to physical growth and health, motor skills and sensory and perceptual capacities in the first two years of life will be highlighted. Maturational and learning theory will be presented as a way of viewing development.

Program Planning I: Introduction to Program Planning

This course will focus on early childhood programming principles and the importance of play in the early childhood curriculum. The dimension of quality indoor and outdoor play environments will be examined. The whole child will be discussed in terms of developmental domains and Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences.

Program Planning I: Developing Musical Intelligence in Young Children

This course will investigate how music and sound experiences contribute to the learning processes of the young child in all areas of the curriculum. Student will discover how music exploration fosters children's growth, and learn its effects on the domains of development.

Program Planning I: Development Linguistic Intelligence in Young Children

This course will investigate how linguistic experiences contribute to the learning processes of the young child in all areas of the curriculum. The students will learn how to set up a rich language and literacy environment which respects the diversity of the Canadian culture.

Foundations of Early Childhood Education

This course will provide and introduction to the field of early childhood education. Early Childhood terminology, types of early childhood programs, early childhood educator training, and program/training standards will be discussed. Characteristics of quality child card, along with model programs will be examined. A broad overview of historical figures and events in addition to contemporary events and influences will be explored.

Growth and Development II

This course will build on the material covered in Growth and Development I and continue exploring the development of infants and toddlers in the areas of cognitive function, language acquisition, personality and social-emotional development. Philosophical and theoretical orientations that have influenced the understanding of these aspects of child development will be discussed.

The content of this course (and the sequence in which the content is taught) is specifically designed for students who speak English as an additional language.

Prerequisites: ECED 1121 with MAS

Child Growth and Development III

This course will focus on principles of child development in the preschool years. Issues related to physical, cognitive, social and emotional development are highlighted. A few key concepts about an individual's intellectual development during the middle childhood and adolescent years will be included. Personality and social development in young adulthood will be examined with a focus on teenage parents.
The content of this course (and the sequence in which the content is taught) is specifically designed for students who speak English as an additional language.
