Effective date of this calendar, unless otherwise indicated, is Sept. 1, 2001 to Aug. 31, 2002.
IDDS 1100 cr-3
Applied Design IThis is a comprehensive introduction to design-related fundamentals and processes. In developing essential technical and conceptual skills, the student will learn how to resolve design problems and communicate successful solutions. Studio projects involve exploration of research and design methods, elements and principles of design, materials and media, visualization and conceptualization, and professional options and applications.
IDDS 1110 cr-3
Drawing for Applied Design IThis course is an introduction to drawing as it relates to applied design. The student will become familiar with the tools, elements, and vocabulary of drawing and will explore line, tone, shape, form, volume, gesture, and movement in searching for ways to develop and communicate ideas in visual form. A wide variety of media will be used in broadening the capacity to draw from observation, memory, and imagination.
IDDS 1121 cr-3
Interdisciplinary StudiesThis course involves the student in an examination of issues and concepts which are common to study and work in all design disciplines. The process emphasized the development of critical thinking, research, and communication skills.
IDDS 1122 cr-3
Interdisciplinary Design History IStudents will examine the evolution of design ideas as they relate to architecture, graphic, fashion, interior design and other design disciplines, not only in the context of Western civilization, but also as they relate to developments in design in other cultures. Lectures, discussions, design and research projects will enhance the students' understanding of factors that have influenced and shaped design from the ancient world to the 19th century.
IDDS 1131 cr-3
Colour Theory IThis course is an introduction to basic colour theories and their application within the design process. Through research projects and studio exercises involving the use of various mediums and techniques, the student will explore the physical characteristics, psychological effects and cultural implications of the use of colour.
IDDS 1150 cr-3
Drafting for Design IStudents will study orthographics, plans, elevations. Emphasis will be placed on drafting techniques including line weights, layout, lettering, and accuracy. No previous drafting experience is necessary.
This course explores historical and theoretical developments leading to contemporary typographic form and usage. Through research and studio projects, typographic elements and design principles will be utilized in the effective communication of ideas and information.
IDDS 1200 cr-3
Applied Design IIThis course is a continuing exploration of design fundamentals and processes. The student will apply previously-developed conceptual and technical skills in resolving design problems and communicating successful solutions. Emphasis will be on the use of elements, principles, media, and methods relating to three-dimensional project work.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1100IDDS 1210 cr-3
Drawing for Applied Design IIThis is a continuing exploration of drawing fundamentals as they relate to applied design. A wide range of studio and on-site experiences will further enhance the student's capacity to utilize the tools, elements, and vocabulary of drawing. Emphasis is placed on working in colour with a variety of both wet and dry media.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1110IDDS 1222 cr-3
Interdisciplinary Design History IIStudents will examine the nineteenth and twentieth century design from a variety of perspectives such as design and fine arts history, anthropology, and sociology, in order to enhance their understanding of the factors that have shaped contemporary design. Methodologies will include student research presentations, design projects, discussions and lectures.
IDDS 1231 cr-3
Colour Theory IIDuring this course the student will gain knowledge and experience in the effective application of colour within the design professions. Students will examine physiological, psychological, cultural, aesthetic and technical aspects of colour.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1131, IDDS 1100IDDS 1250 cr-3
Drafting for Design IIThree-dimensional drafting techniques, mechanical and freehand, will be used to produce isometric, oblique, and one and two-point perspective drawings. Students will also produce a set of working drawings including appropriate legends and schedules.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1150 (or permission of instructor)IDDS 1285 cr-3
Typography & LayoutThis course offers students the opportunity to continue their explorations of typographic former and usage initiated in IDDS 185. Using grids and other visual devices related to graphic layout, students can extend their ability to create effective visual communications.
