Aural Musicianship and Rhythm Training IThis introductory course is for the musician who has had minimal formal musicianship training. It is designed to develop rudimentary aural musicianship through singing English-language folk songs and other composed music. Solfege (moveable doh), hand signs, and rhythm syllables will be taught to assist the student to read, write and hear music. Pentatonic, major and minor scales and the intervals found in those scales will be taught. The beginning skills in improvisation, part-work and conducting will be covered.

Psychophysiology of Music Performance IThis course will introduce the student to the basic psychological theories, research, and ideas related to how music affects people including the interaction among composer, performer and listener. It will also examine the effect of repetitive motion on the performer and will introduce techniques of awareness, relaxation, stretching and counterbalancing of muscle groups. In addition techniques of creative imagination will be introduced with an emphasis on application.

Diploma Chamber Ensemble IIIThis third level Chamber Ensemble course will be in seven sections: orchestral strings; guitar; wind and brass; piano; percussion; jazz-vocal; jazz-instrumental. Kwantlen Jazz BandThis course is a fourth level ensemble which will include rehearsal and performance of music from the Big Band Era of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others to the contemporary Big Band Sounds such as Thad Jones and Bob Brookmeyer. Jazz styles and performance practices as well as improvisational techniques will be essential components of this ensemble. Entrance is by audition and/or interview.

Kwantlen Guitar EnsembleAs a fourth level ensemble class for guitarists, this course will explore classical repertoire, as well as examples from the idioms of Flamenco, popular, jazz, and rock music. The development of sight reading skills, chord recognition and execution, and ensemble skills will be central to this course, which is required for all students whose major instrument is guitar.

Diploma Aural Musicianship IVThis course is a continuation of the skill development in MUSI 351 to develop aural musicianship.
