Public Relations PracticeThis is an introductory course and will focus on public relations and related activities of public affairs, publicity, promotion, advertising, and marketing. Students will prepare news releases, public service announcements, and communication plans.

Writing for NewspapersThis is a course in writing for print media and understanding journalistic style for Public Relation students. Students will learn to adapt their individual writing styles to meet the needs of community and daily newspapers. Student will also learn to recognize a newsworthy story and understand the differences between news, features and opinion writing and receive and introduction to how newspapers function.

Public Relations WritingThis course will help to develop the students' public relations writing skills. Students will be provided with an overview of the media used to communicate to audiences via the written word. Topics to be covered include the principles of public relations writing, as well writing for select audiences, mass audiences and special interest audiences.

Organizational CommunicationsContinuing from JRNL 1141 and PRLN 1150 this course emphasizes the theories and techniques and the planning and design of communications programs in order to meet organizational objectives. Students will examine the content and production of employee publications, videos, and other internal communications media, and develop and present an internal communication plan or project for an actual client.

Computer Skills for Public RelationsThis course follows JRNL 1141 and continues the development of computer skills with an emphasis on those programs relevant to public relations. Instruction will cover software for word-processing, graphics, page layout and project planning. This course will support and supplement PRLN 1241 (Organizational Communications) and PRLN 1251 (Event Management).

Event Management and Public SpeakingDuring this course students will organize and manage a special event. Specific skills will include writing and giving short speeches, welcoming guests, introducing speakers and performers, and conducting a media conference.

Advanced Public Relations WritingStudents continue to develop public relations writing skills learned in PRLN 1221. They are introduced to marketing public relations which provides them with the opportunity to practice writing promotional media releases and media kits, corporate advertising and brochures, trade advertising, writing for audio visual presentations, and feature stories for trade publications.

Audio-Visual and Multi-Media ProductionThis course is an introduction to equipment, theory and methods used in preparation and presentation of multi-media productions. It uses a mix of basic equipment and new technology, which will give students the opportunity to investigate a variety of audio-visual materials used in the field of public relations and advertising.

Public Relations AdvertisingThis course examines the role of advertising in public relations. It includes institutional, advocacy advertising and public service advertising. Students will learn the basic advertising skills to help them produce an effective advertising campaign for non-profit or community organizations.

Business PublicationsThis course introduces students to disciplines involved in the production of business publications, including client consultation, budget preparation and control, scheduling, writing, design, production, and coordination. Particular emphasis is placed on project management. Students work with community clients.

Electronic Media StrategiesThe development of electronic media messages delivered to specific audiences, is the focus of this course. The organization of news and programming, and how various organizations develop strategies to influence the public through the electronic media will be emphasized. Students will learn to meet strategic objectives through video news releases, information videos and public service announcements.

Public Relations ManagementThis course will examine the management of public relations activities such as campaigns. Students will become aware of aspects of managing public relations departments and consultancies. The course will emphasize the integration of social science theories and management techniques in the research, planning, implementation, and evaluation of public relations strategies. Students will learn how to prepare proposals for acquiring new clients. This course is designed to prepare students for their Work Experience program PRLN 2476).

Public Relations PracticumThis course will prepare graduating students for their end-of-semester work experience (PRLN 2476). Students will plan and implement short public relations campaigns for community clients. Students will be given the opportunity to focus on areas they wish to review and practice skills required for their work experience.

Public Relations Work ExperienceThis work experience practicum is arranged for fourth-semester Public Relations students and consists of four weeks working full-time. Students will be given the opportunity to apply skills leaned in the program in an on-the-job situation. Consideration will be given to the individual interests skills and personal suitability of the student, the needs of the student and of the practicum employer.
