Call ProcessingStudents will develop skills needed by communicators for successful integration into public safety and related industries. They will learn technical language used in the industry and how agencies function. Students will learn and practice techniques of call taking and processing using both manual and automated systems. Students work in cooperative teams.

Radio CommunicationsStudents will gain competency through practice in simulated radio dispatching within a communication centre team environment. They will apply radio protocol and procedures to Industry Canada specifications. Students will identify the technologies (telephone, radio and computer aided dispatch systems) used within the communications industry for radio communications.

Human BehaviourStudents will analyze and practice inclusive techniques for dealing with the elderly, young children, the mentally and emotionally disadvantaged and those members of our community with language barriers. In addition, students will be able to recognize and deal effectively with occupational, organizational and event-related stress within themselves. Students will write a personal reflection journal.

Legal & Regulatory InfluencesStudents will examine the legal and regulatory influences on primary responding agencies in public safety such as police, fire and ambulance services. They will research federal and provincial statutes, municipal by-laws and common laws affecting the public safety sector.

Effective Police Radio CommunicationsThis course focuses on the application of knowledge and techniques for police radio communications. Through role playing experiences, the student will reach an operational level of competency up to and including the simulated dispatching in response to multiple incidents.

Human Behaviour (Advanced)This experiential course expands upon the training introduced in PSCM 1140. A study of psychological disorders, social disobedience and victimization will be emphasized from the perspective of Public Safety Communications. The students will study and develop methods to examine areas such as personal stress management and job research techniques.

Corequisites: PSCM 1200, 1260, 1300, 1500This course will introduce the student to the actual work environment of a variety of public safety communications centres. Opportunities are provided for observation and hands-on experience. Students are expected to provide written reports on the procedures, technologies and organization used in each centre.

Fire CommunicationsThis course focuses on fire communication support with emphasis on incident command and federal/provincial dangerous goods legislation. Fire incident processing techniques are studied and in-class simulations are featured in this course.

Emergency PlanningStudents will examine emergency planning and preparedness regulations and procedures at the federal, provincial and municipal level. They will analyze the interaction of public safety agencies during a person-induced or natural disaster. Students apply their knowledge of emergency planning to establish and prepare personal strategies and equipment for themselves and their families.

Effective Emergency Medical CommunicationsThis course examines the function of Medical Communication. Ambulance services operations in British Columbia and other jurisdictions will be studied; as well, basic medical incident processing techniques will be practised.
