English as a Second Language

Academic Preparation
EASL courses provide academic preparation for ESL students who intend to enroll in Kwantlen programs or university transfer courses. Students receive training in the language skills needed for success in academic programs and courses.
The EASL Department offers four levels of academic preparation:
· Level I - EASL 0055
(Intermediate),
· Level II - EASL 0065
(Upper-Intermediate),
and
· Level III - EASL 0075 (Advanced).
· Level IV - EASL 0085
(Upper Advanced)
The EASL Department also offers a number of specialized courses to assist students in specific skills such as listening, speaking, TOEFL preparation, pronunciation, reading, and writing.
Kwantlen also provides combined skills programs which offer ESL support for Early Childhood Education and Nursing. Admission Requirements
Students must present proof of eligibility for entry into each level of academic preparation by providing SLEP or TOEFL scores and ESL Writing Assessment results as demanded by each level or by providing proof of a grade of B minus in EASL 0055 or EASL 0065 as appropriate.
The requirements for entry into the specialized courses are listed under each course description.

EASL 0010 cr-3
Essential Academic Communication - Level 1
Students will practice basic listening and speaking skills essential for academic communication.
Prerequisites: SLEP 40-47 and Band 3 on Kwantlen ESL Writing Assessment or TOEFL 400-449/CB-TOEFL 97-132 and TWE/Essay 2 or Band 3 on Kwantlen ESL Writing Assessment

EASL 0011 cr-3
TOEFL Preparation Level 1
This course is the lower of two Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) preparation courses. It is intended for non-native speakers of English at the upper-intermediate level of English proficiency who have scored between 450 and 520 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and who wish to improve their proficiency in English in order to improve their TOEFL scores.
Prerequisites: TOEFL 450-520, cb-TOEFL 133-190

EASL 0012 cr-3
TOEFL Preparation Level 2
This courses is the higher of two Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) preparation courses. It is intended for non-native speakers of English at the advanced level of English proficiency who have scored above 520 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and who wish to improve their proficiency in English in order to improve their TOEFL scores. This course also includes essay writing and practice on the Test of Written English (TWE).
Prerequisites: TOEFL 520+, cb-TOEFL 191+

EASL 0013 cr-3
Test of Spoken English Preparation: Advanced Pronunciation
This course focuses on intensive speech practice with emphasis on pronunciation accuracy, speech fluency and self-monitoring skills. It is intended for students preparing for the TSE and for those needing to improve their speech clarity.
Prerequisites: TSE or SPEAK score of at least 35 (or with permission of instructor)

EASL 0015 cr-3
An Introduction to Canada
Students will develop their language skills with an emphasis on reading and writing, using factual information about Canada.
Prerequisites: SLEP 40-54 plus Kwantlen ESL Writing Assessment Band 3 or 4 or TOEFL 400-499/CB-TOEFL 97-172 plus TWE/Essay 2 or 3 or Kwantlen ESL Writing Assessment Band 3 or 4.

Academic Listening and Speaking Skills - Level 2
Students at the upper intermediate level will learn and practise academic listening and speaking skills.
Prerequisites: EASL 0055 with a B- or EASL 0010 with a B- or TOEFL 450 or cb-TOEFL 133 or SLEP 47 or TSE 35 or SPEAK 35

EASL 0030 (under development) cr-3
Academic Listening and Speaking Skills Level 3
Students at the lower-advanced level will learn and practise academic listening and speaking skills.

EASL 0040 (under development) cr-3
Academic Listening and Speaking Skills Level 4
Students at the advanced level will learn and practise academic listening & speaking skills.

EASL 0055 cr-6
Engl. for Academic Purposes-Lev. 1
Students at the intermediate level will learn and practice academic listening, speaking, reading, writing and study skills.
Prerequisites: SLEP min. 40 plus Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 3; or TOEFL min. 400 plus TWE 2 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 3 or cb-TOEFL min. 97 plus Essay 2 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 3.

EASL 0065 cr-6
Engl. for Academic Purposes-Lev. 2
Students at the upper-intermediate level will learn and practice academic listening, speaking, reading, writing and study skills.
Prerequisites: B minus in EASL 0055; or SLEP min. 47 plus Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 4; or TOEFL min. 450 plus TWE 3 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 4; or cb-TOEFL min. 133 plus Essay 3 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 4.

EASL 0075 cr-6
Engl. for Academic Purposes-Lev. 3
Students at the lower-advanced level will learn and practice academic reading, writing, and study skills.
Prerequisites: EASL 0065 with a B- ; or SLEP 54-57 plus Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 5; or TOEFL 500-549 plus TWE 4 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 5; or cb-TOEFL 173-196 plus TWE 4 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 5.

EASL 0085 cr-6
Engl. for Academic Purposes - Lev. 4
Students at the advanced level will learn and practise academic writing and reading skills.
Prerequisites: EASL 0075 with a B- or SLEP min. 58 plus Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 6 or TOEFL min. 550 plus TWE 4.5 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 6 or cb-TOEFL min. 197 plus Essay 4.5 or Kwantlen's ESL Writing Assessment Band 6

EASL 1100 cr-3.5
English Upgrading for Graduate Nurses I
This 9-week course provides students with an introduction to the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills necessary in the provision of effective nursing care. It focuses on language skill assessment and remediation, and emphasizes preparation for the TOEFL and TSE. There is also a focus on study skills.
Corequisites: GNEA 1102, GNEA 1103

EASL 1191 cr-4.5
English Upgrading for ECE/EAL Level
Students will learn and practice the reading, writing, listening, speaking, and study skills necessary to support their studies in Early Childhood Education and their future careers as child educators.

EASL 1200 cr-5
English Upgrading for Graduate Nurses II
This 19 week course builds on the work begun in EASL 1100. Students apply skills learned previously, focus on refining control and extending cultural awareness. Medical terminology, writing for nursing purposes and the RNABC required critical thinking skills are emphasized. Preparation for TOEFL and TSE will continue. In addition, there is a focus on job seeking skills such as resume writing and interviewing skills.
Prerequisites: GNEA 1102, GNEA 1103, EASL 1100
Corequisites: GNEA 1201, GNEA 1202

EASL 1291 cr-3
English Upgrading for ECE/EAL Level 2
Students will review and practice the listening, speaking, reading, writing and study skills necessary to support their studies in Early Childhood Education and their future careers as child educators.
Prerequisites: EASL 1191

EASL 1300 cr-1
English Upgrading for Graduate Nurses III
This 7-week course focuses or remediation for students who have not achieved passing scores (as determined by the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia) on TOEFL and TSE. Students who have completed EASL GNEA 1200) successfully and who have achieved TOEFL 550 and TSE 50 may either carry forward their EASL 1200 GNEA 1200) mark into EASL 1300 GNEA 1300) or, in special circumstances, undertake an individualized remediation program under the direction of the instructor.
Prerequisites: GNEA 1201, GNEA 1202, EASL 1200
Corequisites: GNEA 1301, GNEA 1302

EASL 1391 cr-1.5
Engl. Upgrading for ECE/EAL Lev. 3
Students will learn how to write a library research paper and how to prepare a resume. Students will also receive ongoing listening, speaking, reading, and writing support in their ECE course work.
Prerequisites: EASL 1291
