Start Date: September (Full-time) DescriptionThe two-year Graphic and Visual Design diploma program helps students to prepare for an entry-level assistant position in the graphic design profession. Students will develop knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to research, creative problem solving, concept development, image development, and business practices. Students will learn and use computer applications. They will also develop an awareness of the social, cultural, and historical role of communications design. Career OpportunitiesGraduates will be prepared to compete for positions in independent design studios, corporate in-house design departments, print and production companies, and other design-related industries. They may be involved in the design of promotional materials, publications, business communications, packaging, and other graphic design-related products and services. Student ProfileStudents in the Graphic & Visual Design program represent a mix of high school graduates and students who have prior educational or professional design-related experience. Admission RequirementsImportant DatesFirst day to apply: November 1, 2001 Last day to apply: March 31, 2002 Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as they can, as admission is based on the date of application, once all entry requirements have been met. The program and admission requirements are under review. Please contact Admissions for current information. Students without educational or professional design-related experience are encouraged to apply to the Interdisciplinary Design Studies (IDDS) program or equivalent. Students with educational or professional design-related experience are encouraged to apply directly to the Graphic and Visual Design (GRVD) program. Applicants may be recommended to both GRVD and IDDS in order to maximize opportunities for entry. Applicants must participate in a selection process that will include the presentation of a portfolio of art and design and design-related work, a short design project and a written detailed statement of your personal educational/professional goals. In order to be considered for entry into Graphic and Visual Design, program applicants are required to provide proof of minimum achievement of level 4 LPI with a score of 26 on the Essay and 6 on the English usage - note: the LPI level is presently being reviewed, or English 12 with a B or better, or successful completion of a university transfer English course. Prior learning assessment of sufficient comprehensive applied design industry experience is available. The Registrar's Office will notify applicants of the date and time of the orientation session related to the evaluation process. The orientation session and evaluation processes are usually conducted at the end of April, to the beginning of May of each year. Students who are participating in an evaluation process must attend this general orientation session. Alternative arrangements may be possible for students who live outside the Greater Vancouver Region and who cannot attend in person. It is, however, in the best interest of applicants to make every effort to attend in person. General Kwantlen admission requirements also apply.
