Students study the morphology, anatomy, physiology, and reproduction of cone-bearing and flowering plants. They will apply appropriate plant taxonomy and nomenclature to the major plant families used in commercial horticulture. They will work with fresh and preserved plant material to provide an understanding of current horticultural practices, and will demonstrate different aspects of plant physiology in the laboratory.

Students will study soil and soilless media, taking into consideration soil formation, physical, biological, and chemical properties of soil, fertilizer use and behaviour, soil amendments and soil test result analysis.

Students will explore the machinery and mechanical systems used in horticulture. They will learn the principles and terminology of electrical, hydraulic, braking, steering, power and lubrication systems. Turf Maintenance Operations
Students will perform work on the Kwantlen University College golf course and grounds to gain practical experience in turf maintenance. They will engage in tasks including reel, rotary, and flail mowers, core cultivation, topdressing, seeding, sodding, sand trap maintenance, and other tasks as required to maintain a variety of turf operations.

Intro to Plant Identification
Students will practise skills that will enable them to identify a wide range of plants used in all segments of horticulture including examples of trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers, perennials, annuals, house plants, and cut flowers. They will study the important characteristics of leaves, flowers fruits, plant shapes, and branching patterns, and will learn about growing requirements and plant use and availability.

Production Practices - Fall
Students will study essential horticultural principles and will work in University College and commercial greenhouse facilities to gain experience in basic horticultural labour and equipment operations. Students will maintain and harvest fall season crops, possibly including poinsettias, chrysanthemums, cut flowers, potted plants, greenhouse vegetables, and forestry crops. Essential horticultural principles will be introduced.

Students will learn about pests (including insects and mites) and how to prevent and manage them through effective crop maintenance and a combination of chemical and biological control methods. Students will also learn about diseases and disorders in plants (including bacteria, viruses, algae, water moulds and fungi) and how to use backpack sprayers.

Introduction to Pest Management
Students will study the morphology, physiology, and habits of pests (including insects, mites, and vertebrates) to select a combination of cultural, chemical, physical, and biological control methods. They will work with diseases and disorders of plants, and will demonstrate concepts of the spread of disease. Students will handle weed specimens to identify and choose appropriate control measures. They will discuss the tenets of integrated pest management and relate them to commercial horticultural situations, and will learn the safe and effective use of 25 kg-backpack and/or canister sprayers.

Students will practice the basic skills and techniques for surveying, installing and maintaining landscapes. They will study print reading and drafting and will learn about the basic principles of landscape design for residential properties.

Students will study basic drafting techniques and standards. They will also practise drafting skills through a series of manual and computer assisted drafting exercises. Students will practise the proper use of drafting tools, techniques, and a computer assisted design program.

Students will study and apply turf management principles and techniques, including turfgrass identification, fertilization, irrigation, mowing, turfgrass establishment, and renovation practices, and the development of cultural programs.

Arboriculture I
Students will study the relationships between plant function and plant form and structure. They will gain practical experience, as weather permits, in pruning trees and shrubs using hand pruning tools, power hedge trimmers, and a chipper.

Plant ID: Protected Cultivation
Students will practice the identification of plant species produced in commercial greenhouses, as well as plants commonly used in interior plantscapes. Students will also learn about the use of plants, their growing seasons and market value.

Students will enhance their plant identification skills learned in HORT 1155 through field identification of trees, ground covers, vines and other plants. They will discuss each plant with respect to shape, branching patterns, flower, leaf and fruit characteristics, growing requirements and use in the landscape.

Plant Propagation
Students will discuss the main topics of plant propagation. They will perform all aspects of seed propagation including seed storage, seed quality, seed dormancy, and the maintenance of environmental factors affecting seed germination. Students will perform micropropagation in a tissue culture laboratory. They will also perform traditional vegetative propagation (cuttings, grafting, division, layering, and specialized stems and roots) and discuss the proper environment used for each technique. Students will discuss plant breeding and the importance of Plant Breeders' Rights in Canada.

Production Practices - Spring
Students will work in University College and commercial greenhouse facilities to gain experience in basic horticultural labour and equipment operations. Students will maintain and harvest winter and spring season crops, possibly including Easter lilies, cut flowers, bedding plants, potted plants, greenhouse vegetables, and forestry crops. Essential horticultural principles will be introduced.

Horticultural Work Experience
This course consists of approved and counselled work experience in the horticultural industry for a minimum of 14 weeks or 490 hours (normally completed during the summer between first and second year). A report may be required.

Grounds Machinery
This course is an in-depth study of horticultural and turfgrass equipment used for cultivation, seeding, spraying, moving, aerating, top dressing, turf renovation and other grounds maintenance activities. Machinery selection and purchase, maintenance, operation and design of equipment (electronics, hydraulics, hydrostatics, tear down, chain and blade sharpening, and troubleshooting small gasoline and diesel engines) are also dealt with.

Landscape and Turf Pests
Students will undertake a detailed study of specific pest problems common to ornamental and native trees, shrubs, ground covers and turf grasses. They will explore pest life cycles, plant symptoms, pest prevention and pest control. Students will also gain an understanding of integrated pest and disease management using a variety of methods including Internet resources and diagnostic CD-ROM's.

This course is an introduction to the history and basic principles of landscape design for single family residential properties including plant selection and placement, creative problem solving, and client and landscape maintenance criteria. Students will be involved in projects for actual clients and practise the preparation of working drawings such as concept and planting plans.

This course is based on field studies and slide presentations to further students' identification of annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs, ornamental grasses and ferns. Also discussed are food plants such as fruit-bearing bushes and trees. Each plant is discussed with respect to form, texture, habit, foliage, flower and fruit characteristics, cultural requirements, and use in gardens and specialty landscapes.

Turf Management II
Students will build on the skills acquired in HORT 1230 and continue to explore the principles of turf grass growth and development and the impact of the atmospheric, edaphic and biotic environments on the turf grass community. Students will also learn about the latest development in turf grass breeding and research.

Irrigation and Drainage
Students will study the soil-water-plant relationship as it applies to landscape irrigation and drainage. Topics will include irrigation and drainage design, installation and maintenance.

This course consists of a detailed study of the pest problems common to turf grasses. Students will also learn about the importance of integrated pest and disease management using a variety of methods including internet resources and diagnostic CD ROM's.

Propagation of Woody and Herbaceous Ornamental Plants
Students use the principles of plant propagation techniques learned in HORT 1261 and apply them to perennials, trees and shrubs commonly grown in the nursery industry. The collection, extraction and successful germination of seed will be described and demonstrated. Students practise vegetative plant propagation techniques such as grafting, budding, layering and micropropagation and multiplying plants through cuttings. Students also learn about the proper environment needed to achieve successful and efficient results.

Students will be introduced to field nursery production in British Columbia. Greenhouse Vegetable Production
Students will gain a thorough understanding of the culture and management practices of greenhouse vegetable crops. They will study propagation methods, temperature, light and fertilizer requirements, crop scheduling, integrated pest management and cultivated varieties. Students will gain hands-on experience through growing tomato, long English cucumber, sweet pepper and lettuce crops in the University College greenhouses.

Greenhouse Pests
This course consists of a detailed study of major greenhouse pests. Topics include insects and their life cycles and feeding habits, fungus and bacterial diseases as well as viruses. Proper identification of pest problems will be practiced during lab classes. Students will practise methods of control including fogging, spraying, misting and drenching. The importance of integrated pest management will be stressed.

Students will learn the preparation of business plans, cost accounting and the administration of contracts. They will also be introduced to a variety of contracts, business forms and specifications, and will estimate a landscape project and be involved in tender opening including the comparison of results.

Landscape Design II
Students will learn about the challenges associated with commercial and industrial landscape design. Topics will include design skills such as cut and fill calculations, site and client analysis, and plant composition. They will carry out design projects which include the preparation of working drawings such as grading plans, elevation drawings and construction details.

Landscape Construction
Students will explore both the theory and practice of landscape construction. They will have an opportunity to practice the construction and installation of landscape features such as patios, retaining walls, ponds/pools and low voltage landscape lighting.

Wood Construction
Students will explore both the theory and practice of light wood construction. They will have the opportunity to work on projects such as fences, decks, arbors, lattices, etc. A basic set of hand tools may be required.

In this introduction to computer-aided drafting, students will carry out the design of landscape projects. Using selected software, they will plan, create and print landscape drawings.

Plant Identification IV
Students will enhance their plant identification skills learned in HORT 1145. The course is based entirely on the field identification of trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines and other plants. Students will study unusual plants and cultivated varieties with landscape potential.

Turfgrass Irrigation Design
This is an advanced irrigation design course specifically related to golf course and athletic field irrigation. Topics include sprinkler performance, irrigating greens, tees and fairways, valves, controllers, pipe layout, sizing and pumps.

Sports Turf and Alternate Surfaces

Floriculture II
This course is the continuing study of commercial production practices of seasonal potted and cut flower crops grown in Canadian greenhouses. Propagation, cultural and environmental requirements, problems and grading will be covered for each crop. Daily responsibilities in Kwantlen's greenhouses are an integral part of the course.

Forestry Crop Production
This course is an introduction to the culture and management of forestry crops which are grown in western Canada. Propagation methods, temperature and light requirements, fertilization, and integrated pest management will be discussed for each crop mentioned. Production techniques include seedlings, stecklings and tissue culture.

Ergonomics and Safety
Students will examine work station design and work procedures to maximize productivity and maintain employee health and motivation. In addition, students will become familiar with operational and structural safety issues.

Production Horticulture Management
Students will explore the financial aspects of growing different crops and using different labour or propagation procedures. They will discuss the importance of well timed crop rotation and the costs involved with each crop. Topics also include personnel requirements, wholesale and retail marketing and guidelines for decision-making.

Floriculture: Spring Production
