Interdisciplinary Design Studies

IDDS 1100 cr-3

Applied Design I
This is a comprehensive introduction to design-related fundamentals and processes. In developing essential technical and conceptual skills, the student will learn how to resolve design problems and communicate successful solutions. Studio projects involve exploration of research and design methods, elements and principles of design, materials and media, visualization and conceptualization, Studio projects involve exploration of research and design methods, elements and principles of design, materials and media, visualization and conceptualization, creative problem-solving, and both general and discipline -specific applications.

IDDS 1110 cr-3
Drawing for Applied Design I
This course is an introduction to drawing as it relates to applied design. The student will become familiar with the tools, elements, and vocabulary of drawing and will explore line, tone, shape, form, volume, gesture, and movement in searching for ways to develop and communicate ideas in visual form. A wide variety of media will be used in broadening the capacity to draw from observation, memory, and imagination.

IDDS 1121 cr-3
Interdisicplinary Studies
This course involves the student in an examination of issues and concepts which are common to study and work in all design disciplines. The process emphasizes the development of critical thinking, research, and communication skills.

IDDS 1122 cr-3
Interdisciplinary Design History I
Students will examine the evolution of design ideas as they relate to architecture, graphic, fashion, interior design and other design disciplines, not only in the context of Western civilization, but also as they relate to developments in design in other cultures. Lectures, discussions, design and research projects will enhance the students' understanding of factors that have influenced and shaped design from the ancient world to the 19th century.

IDDS 1131 cr-3
Colour Theory I
This course is an introduction to basic colour theories and their application within the design process. Through research projects and studio exercises involving the use of various mediums and techniques, the student will explore the physical characteristics, psychological effects and cultural implications of the use of colour.

IDDS 1150 cr-3

Drafting for Design I
Students will study orthographics, plans, and elevations. Emphasis will be placed on drafting techniques including line weights, layout, lettering, and accuracy. No previous drafting experience is necessary.

IDDS 1185 cr-3
Typography
This course explores historical and theoretical developments leading to contemporary typographic form and usage. Through research and studio projects, typographic elements and design principles will be utilized in the effective communication of ideas and information.

IDDS 1200 cr-3
Applied Design II
This course is a continuing exploration of design fundamentals and processes. The student will apply previously developed problem solving, conceptual, and technical skills in resolving design problems and communicating successful solutions. Emphasis will be on the use of elements, principles, media, and methods relating to three-dimensional project work.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1100

IDDS 1210 cr-3
Drawing for Applied Design II
This is a continuing exploration of drawing fundamentals as they relate to applied design. A wide range of studio and on-site experiences will further enhance the student's capacity to utilize the tools, elements, and vocabulary of drawing. Emphasis is placed on working in colour with a variety of both wet and dry media.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1110

IDDS 1222 cr-3
Interdisciplinary Design History II
This course explores the evolution of design and the development of contemporary design concepts and practices. Studio and research-based projects will provide the basis for an in-depth examination of the social contexts and historical significance of major design-related events, ideas, styles, and movements from the Industrial Revolution to present day.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1122, or permission of instructor

IDDS 1250 cr-3

Computer Assisted Drafting for Applied Design
Students will learn to produce drawings digitally using computer assisted drafting software (with an emphasis on AutoCAD). They will create two- and three-dimensional drawings to communicate design ideas visually through a variety of design projects. Students should have some drafting background: manual or digital, before starting this course.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1150

IDDS 1285 cr-3
Typography & Layout
This course offers students the opportunity to continue their explorations of typographic former and usage initiated in IDDS 185. Using grids and other visual devices related to graphic layout, students can extend their ability to create effective visual communications.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1185
