Outdoor Power Equipment Technician


OPET 1101 cr-1
Safe Work Practices for Outdoor Power Equipment Trade
An introductory course on the basic elements of safe practices in the outdoor power equipment work environment. Topics include: Worker's Compensation Act and WHMIS legislation applications, survival first aid, shop safety, extinguishing fires, using safe body mechanics and personal safety equipment.
Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor.

Apply Trades Math and Science Concepts
This course is intended to clarify for the student applicable information on the application of mathematics and science concepts that are used in the Outdoor Power Equipment Trade.
Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor.

OPET 1103 cr-1
Perform Welding, Cutting & Brazing
A one week course in welding safety and the basic operation of oxy-fuel cutting, welding, and brazing procedures on mild steel plate, light tubing, and 14/18 gauge sheet metal. The student will also be given instruction in arc welding procedures and applications.
Prerequisites: OPET 1101.

Maintain Good Working Relations
The student will learn to use the resources related to the trade and then to apply them with effective communication and interpersonal skills to the workplace environment in a variety of roles. The importance of monitoring, analyzing, and correcting performance will be emphasized.

Use Tool, Fasteners & Fittings
The student will learn the effective and safe operation of a variety of shop hand and power tools. They will also be able to apply appropriate tools to a variety of mechanical applications where they relate to fastening device. Emphasis will be placed on safe operation of all tools and off road equipment.

Describe Applications of Electricity
The student will explore and describe the basic fundamental of electricity. This will include Ohm's Law, DC and AC current, induction, basic motor theory, and use of digital multimeters. Several projects will be constructed to illustrate the electrical theory.

Describe Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines
This is an introduction to the mechanical fundamentals, lubrication and cooling details of two and four stroke cycle reciprocating internal combustion engines. The student will dismantle, inspect, reassemble, and run single cylinder examples of two types.
Prerequisites: OPET 1101, 1102, 1105

OPET 1108 cr-4
Overhaul Two and Four Stoke Gasoline and Diesel Engines
This is an in-depth engine rebuild and failure analysis course for two and four stroke cycle reciprocating internal combustion engines, both gasoline and diesel. The student will assess, troubleshoot, dismantle, inspect, reassemble, and run single and multiple-cylinder examples of all types.

Maintain & Repair Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Systems
This course is intended to cover the theory and application of all major methods of fuel carburation and injection for reciprocating internal combustion engines. It will cover float, diaphragm, fixed and variable venturi carbs, basic fuel injection and turbocharging. The student is to disassemble, inspect, reassemble and adjust a variety of carb. and injector examples.

Ignition and Electrical Systems
The student will be able to describe and repair a variety of ignition systems, their applications along with their integration into various electrical systems, Emphasis will be placed on the student's ability to analyze and troubleshoot complete systems on a representative grouping of power equipment units.

OPET 1111 cr-2
Charging Systems, Generators and Motors
This course will have the student describe and diagnose inductive electrical systems, including charging, generators and motors. An emphasis will be placed on practical applications and system problem solving for their use in a variety of situations.
Prerequisites: OPET 1110

Maintain & Repair Hydraulic Systems
This course begins with the basics of fluid power and then progresses through their application to compact equipment. The student will describe, service, disassemble, troubleshoot and repair hydraulic components and systems.
Corequisites: OPET 1101, 1102, 1105

Maintain & Repair Power Transfer Systems
The students will be able to describe, disassemble, diagnose, troubleshoot, repair and reassemble a wide range of power transfer systems. Theses will include belt, chain, and gear drive system found on outdoor power equipment.

OPET 1114 cr-2
Maintain & Repair Frames, Wheels and Braking Systems
Frame construction, suspensions, steering and brakes for outdoor power equipment are covered in this course. Basic troubleshooting and repair will be emphasized.

OPET 1115 cr-4
Service and Diagnose Equipment
This course is the practical application in a school setting of all the elements in the Outdoor Power Equipment Program. The student will demonstrate their competence by diagnosing and repairing a range of power products.
Prerequisites: OPET 1108, 1109, 1110, 1111, 1112, 1113, 1114
