When you want to remove yourself from a course, you may be eligible for a drop or a withdrawal depending on the date. A drop and a withdrawal act differently.
Dropping a course
- Before the term (not the course) starts, a dropped course may be eligible for a 100% reversal of tuition and fees.
- During the add/drop period (see the Academic Schedule), a dropped course may be eligible for a 70% reversal of tuition and fees.
- U-Passes are only reversed for future months when you drop all registered courses in a term.
- A dropped course is removed from the student record/official transcript.
Withdrawing from a course
- After the add/drop period (see the Academic Schedule), a course may be withdrawn from. There is no tuition or fee reversal for a withdrawn course.
- U-Passes are only reversed for future months when you withdraw from all registered courses in a term.
- Health and dental fees are not reversed for withdrawn courses.
- A withdrawn course remains on the student record/official transcript; the course is notated with a W. The W is not included in the term or cumulative GPAs.
What is the deadline to drop or withdraw?
First determine if you are in a full term course, an intersession course, or a non-standard course to determine the add/drop and withdrawal deadlines appropriately. A full term course runs for four months: Fall is September to December, Spring is January to April, and Summer is May to August (see Full Semester dates in the Academic Schedule). An intersession course will only run for either the first two months (Session One) of a full term, or the last two months (Session Two) of a full term (see Intersession Dates in the Academic Schedule). Note that intersession ELS courses may have different deadlines; see the Academic Schedule). Non-standard term courses are any courses that are neither full term or interssions (see Spring 2018 Non-Standard Add, Drop and Withdrawal Deadlines).
The Academic Schedule lists the add/drop deadline as the "Last day to register"; and the withdrawal deadline as the "Last day to withdraw."
We have compiled a list of full semester and intersession deadlines below; for non-standard deadlines, see .
