Kwantlen Eagles basketball sweep Kermodes as playoffs approach

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles men's and women's basketball teams took care of business as both teams earned a pair of victories against Quest University Kermodes.

With the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association’s (BCCAA) playoffs quickly approaching, the men’s team took advantage of the Kermodes winless streak with two convincing wins, 66-56 on Friday night and 59-48 on Saturday. Leading the way for the Eagles on Friday night was Kevin Kokoska (Langley), who scored 20-points and grabbed nine rebounds; and Nick Lafeur (Maple Ridge) who added 17-points and three rebounds. Saturday night saw three Eagles score in the double digits as Kenny Ryan (Delta) led the way with 15-points, and Omid Davani (Port Coquitlam) and Lafeur scored 13-points each.

“We did what we had to do,” said head coach Bernie Love. “The wins give us a chance to control our fate. The game against Langara will allow us to clinch a playoff spot but more importantly, we want to go into the playoffs on a winning note.”

On the women’s side, the wins 64-57 on Friday and 61-50 on Saturday, improved their record to 5-12 in the BCCAA team standings. Although they were officially eliminated from playoff contention last week, head coach Gary Pawluk saw the importance of the games they won.

“It is important to win the games we are supposed to,” commented Pawluk. “The wins will give us some much needed confidence that can carry into our game next week.”

The Eagles turned up the defensive intensity against the Kermodes for both games. The Eagles also had three players score in the double digits over the weekend, led by Chantelle Doerksen (Abbotsford) who scored 26-points combined (14 on Friday and 12 on Saturday). Along with Doerksen, the Eagles saw Michela Fiorido (Surrey) average 10-points per game, and Melissa Adrian (Langley) and Koral Fraser (Surrey) taking turns scoring 14-points in Friday’s and Saturday’s games, respectively.

The Eagles will travel to Vancouver to play the Langara Falcons in the BCCAA regular season finale on Friday night. The Falcons swept the Eagles during their first encounter, defeating the men’s team (78-56) and women’s team (62-55). For the latest scores and standings, visit www.pacwestbc.ca
