Tue, Sep 29, 2009

The women’s soccer team is back on track after their 4-1 win at home over the Douglas Royals last Saturday afternoon. The Eagles took control early in the first half after a quick passing combination with Shanay Sangha (Richmond) to third-year athlete Marissa Dionne (North Delta) who opened the Eagles scoring with a perfectly executed drive into the right top corner of the Royals net.

The second goal, secured before the end of the first half was a joint effort between third-year Courtney McCulloch (Surrey) and second-year Thoralea Pilton (Surrey) who headed the ball into the net.In the second half, second-year Kelsey Docherty (Vancouver) scored her first goal of the season and was followed up by a fourth and final goal by Sangha, who after having a few attempts in the match, found the back of the net. This brings Sangha’s total to three goals in six matches.

Goalkeeper Amelia Ng (Richmond) was named team MVP for her courage and commitment to the team. Ng was injured at Kamloops but decided to play the game, despite the injury. Ng’s performance was supported by strong defensive team in Brittany McNeill (Delta), Christine Walker (White Rock), Christina Henderson (Delta), Sarah Davies (White Rock) and Jackie Buchler (Delta), who made sure that the Royals had no clear shots on goal for the majority of the match.

On the men’s side, the Eagles dropped another game this past weekend when they were defeated by the Royals 8-0.The results drop the Eagles to fourth place in pool A; seven points behind the UBC O Heat.

NEXT GAMES: The Eagles play two at home this weekend against the Quest Kermodes on Saturday and the VIU Mariners on Sunday. Kick-off is at 12pm for both days
