When the final whistle blew last Saturday at Newton Athletic Park, the KPU Eagles men's and women's soccer teams had reason to celebrate with two wins over the newest team in the BCCAA, the Quest Kermodes.
First year forward Tara Makrigiannis (Surrey) locked in her second goal for the season with a perfectly executed corner kick scored late in the second half to set up the women's team with a 1-0 win. Second year goalie Rosemary Kelly (Langley) also recorded her first shut-out of the season.
The men’s win over Quest was a long time coming for the young team who until Saturday, had yet to win a game this season. The Eagles stamped their mark early and scored both goals in the first half. Kevin Coles (Surrey) was a tireless worker in the Eagles midfield. Justin Lodge (Surrey) took the two goal honours; second year goalie Thomas Johnston (Surrey) recorded his first BCCAA shut-out and was supported by a strong Eagles defense of Daniel Campagne (Surrey), Gagan Dhillon (Surrey), Alvin Naidu (Surrey) and Jordan Keller (Delta).
In Sunday’s match, the Eagles faced the number two-ranked B pool team; the VIU Mariners. On the women’s side, it was a team effort on all counts, but the Eagles goal tally was finalized by the duo of rookie forward Shanay Sangha (Richmond) and third-year midfielder Marissa Dionne (Delta) who teamed up to bring the Eagles to a 2-2 tie. Sangha’s goal, her fourth for the season, ties her for 5th place in BCCAA scoring. The weekend’s results brings the women’s team to fourth place in Pool A in the BCCAA league; one point behind the UNBC Timberwolves.
On the men’s side, despite multiple scoring chances, the much improved Eagles couldn’t seem to find the back of the net to tie up the Mariners and were defeated 1-0. The Eagles remain in fifth place in Pool A; five points behind UBC Okanagan Heat.
