KPU women’s soccer team wins provincial championship

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) The KPU Eagles women's soccer team made history today as the first Eagles squad, in any sport, to bring home a British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) provincial championship banner. The women's soccer team thrilled the crowd in their three penalty shootout wins, defeating Vancouver Island University, Thompson Rivers University and finally Langara College, and clinched the first BCCAA championship in the history of the university.

"I am so proud of the team for their courageous and inspiring performance. To win the conference and advance to the national championship is a testament of their hard work and determination,” commented Elise Le Brun, director of athletics and recreation. “It’s a huge accomplishment for the women’s soccer team and a proud moment for the university and the KPU Eagles athletics program."

The Eagles had to work hard to even get to the championship tournament with a league that was neck and neck all season long. Finishing the regular season play with a 5-5-2 record, the women’s Eagle squad rose to the challenge of the tournament and peaked at just the right time.

The tournament, held Friday through Sunday last week by Douglas College in Coquitlam, was hard fought with many goals and even more saves. Freshman goalkeeper Amelia Ng (Richmond) had a standout performance for the Eagles facing numerous shots and standing her ground during the 15 penalty kicks she faced throughout the tournament. She was justly rewarded with the top honours of Tournament All Star, Best Goalkeeper, as well as the 2009 BCCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player. Joining her on the list of awarded athletes were Christine (Barb) Walker (White Rock), Christina Henderson (Delta), and Shanay Sangha (Richmond).

Not only does the win mean the girls get to put their name in KPU Athletics’ history, it also qualified them for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships, hosted by Humber College in Etobicoke, Ontario. The tournament will run from November 4 to 7 this year.
