Kwantlen launches new Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University has launched a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Visual Arts degree program. Offered at Kwantlen’s Surrey Campus, this program provides learning opportunities ranging from traditional studio arts to new media technologies in a critically engaged academic environment.

Scott McBride, chair of the Department of Fine Arts comments, “Kwantlen’s new BFA cultivates creative excellence through technical expertise, conceptual approaches and innovative applications in a diverse community of students, artists and professional faculty.”

Key features of the BFA, Visual Arts degree include the following:

  • An emphasis on contemporary studio arts in two-dimensional (drawing, painting and print media), three-dimensional (sculpture, ceramics and installation), photography, digital media, and visual and contemporary theory.
  • A commitment to a student-centred teaching environment, smaller class sizes, and convenient access to qualified faculty.
  • An opportunity for students to complete a BFA degree in their community. Kwantlen Polytechnic University has a long-standing, supportive relationship with the arts and culture sector in the South Fraser region.
  • The preparation of students for entry into the cultural industries sector and the labour market by incorporating hands-on learning and practical job skills training into the curriculum.

Kwantlen visual arts graduates will acquire the knowledge and skills to either further their education in post-graduate studies or develop a successful professional career in a broad spectrum of areas including museums and galleries, advertising, electronic arts, web design, architecture, theatre, TV, film, education, journalism, publishing, graphics, general industry and business.

Kwantlen’s new BFA degree program is part of the university’s many growing liberal arts programs, which include cultural studies, women’s studies and film studies.
