Kwantlen recognizes student-athletes at annual awards

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University honoured the academic and athletic achievements of its varsity athletes at its 10th Annual Athletics Banquet at the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre in Langley.

With a warm welcome by the university’s president and vice-chancellor David Atkinson, top student-athletes were rewarded for their dedication and commitment to Kwantlen. Top honours were presented to Mike Davis (White Rock) and Taminder Dhaliwal (Surrey) who accepted the President’s award for most outstanding male and female student-athlete. This award is presented to a male and female student-athlete who has shown outstanding commitment to the program, demonstrated leadership and attained a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

27 awards were presented throughout the evening, including:

  • Scott Robertson (Surrey) - The men’s golf Most Valuable Player Award, the Jeff Norris Golf Award.
  • Taminder Dhaliwal (Surrey) - The President’s Award of Distinction, women’s basketball Most Valuable Player, and captain recipient of the Team Academic Award.
  • Mike Davis (White Rock) - The President’s Award of Distinction, the men’s basketball Most Valuable Player Award, SIRC CCAA Award for Academic All Canadian, and British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) Men’s Second Team All Star.
  • Samantha Lewis (Delta) and James Arseneau (Surrey) - The Charter Buslines Freshman Academic award for the highest undergraduate Grade Point Average in the first semester.

As the 10th anniversary of Kwantlen Athletics, the celebration hosted two Kwantlen Eagles alumni who helped to develop Kwantlen Athletics: Michelle Roots and Prince Carino. Co-sharing the duty of keynote speaker, Roots and Carino shared their experience as Eagles athletes. Together, they delivered the message that athletes should capitalize on every opportunity and be committed to leaving a legacy with the Eagles program.
