Kwantlen fashion students sweep medals at 2010 B.C. Skills Canada Competition
(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Three Kwantlen Polytechnic University fashion students swept the medals at the 2010 B.C. Skills Canada Competition in Abbotsford.
Competing at the post-secondary level in the fashion technology category, Kwantlen fashion student Nancy Fedoruk (Vancouver) took home the gold medal while her peers Jo-Tzu Hu (Coquitlam) and Amanda Tan (Vancouver) won silver and bronze, respectively. The scores for their designs were based on creativity, quality of pattern drafting and garment construction skills. The students had eight hours to complete the pattern drafts and sew up fully-lined garments. This year, the garments were skirts and bustiers.
Reflecting on the competition, Fedoruk credits Kwantlen for her success. "The B.C. Skills Competition was a great experience and it allowed me to apply and test my skills learnt at Kwantlen. I feel very fortunate for the education I have received and how dedicated the instructors are in preparing students for the fashion industry."
As the gold medalist in the provincial skills competition, Fedoruk will advance to the national Skills Canada Competition, which will take place from May 20-23 in Waterloo, Ontario.
The Skills Canada competitions allow young Canadians, studying a skilled trade or technology, to challenge themselves to become the best in their discipline. Students compete at local, regional and provincial levels to win the right to represent their province at the national-level competition.
As the only four-year program of its kind in Western Canada, Kwantlen's Bachelor of Design (Fashion and Technology) program prepares students for careers in the global apparel economy in fashion design, production, marketing and computer technology. For more information, visit kwantlen.ca/design
