Revolutionary UK designer Julian Roberts adds Kwantlen to his North American tour

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Friday, June 18, 2010 at 6 p.m., Julian Roberts, inventor of the Subtraction Cutting method, will present his innovative concepts in pattern and design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Richmond campus. His Kwantlen tour stop is one of only two in Canada.

He is the foremost pattern innovator of our time and has pioneered spontaneity in clothing design. He has lectured to groups of architects and mathematicians; a testament that his “geometry without numbers” has an appeal surpassing applications in fashion. Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the Center for Pattern Design in San Francisco have partnered to bring Roberts to Vancouver for two events over two days of unforgettable demonstrations of his concepts and techniques.

The Friday evening event will provide a social mingle opportunity and a display of designs by Roberts and other international designers who use his Subtraction Cutting method. Katherine Soucie, from Vancouver, is the first Canadian designer to use his method and will be showcasing a few of her dresses using the method and will be on hand, along with Roberts, to speak to guests.

On Saturday, June 19, Roberts will host a master class where participants will get a chance to see the work of this inspiring genius.

This two-day fashion design seminar is an example of the innovative learning opportunities that Kwantlen offers. It not only provides a dynamic approach to teaching and learning, but also enables students, faculty, the design community and industry professionals the opportunity to explore new techniques in pattern design from the inventor, and to network with each other. As a leader in fashion design education, Kwantlen offers a unique university experience and industry connections that prepare its graduates for success.
