Kwantlen campuses hold National Day of Remembrance vigils, December 6

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Vigils took place on Kwantlen Polytechnic University campuses in Surrey, Richmond, Langley and Cloverdale at noon today to help raise awareness about violence against women by remembering the lives of the 14 women who were killed at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989.

Surrey MLAs Stephanie Cadieux, Harry Bains, Bruce Ralston and Sue Hammell joined Kwantlen faculty, staff and employees in the vigils. As the name of each victim of the Montreal massacre was read, a red rose was placed in the garden and a candle was lit to remember them.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada and is held annually on December 6. The Kwantlen Faculty Association has been hosting vigils on campus to commemorate the date since the early 1990s.
