Tue, Feb 21, 2012

After two-days of competition at the 2012 PACWEST Provincial Championships, the Kwantlen Eagles badminton team will send four athletes to the 2012 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships.

The first of Kwantlen's National berths came in the Men's Doubles with fourth-year veteran, Willis Kwee (Richmond, BC) paired with second-year, Andy Wong (Vancouver, BC). Kwee and Wong took silver losing to Douglas College but winning their games against Capilano (21-17, 17-21, 21-17) and VIU (21-11, 21-11).

The Mixed Doubles team, comprised of third-year athlete, Michelle Simard (Surrey, BC), and first-year, Bradley Low (Vancouver, BC) had a great round-robin tournament taking silver place and another berth for the Eagles at the National Championships. Simard has qualified for every National Championship since becoming a student-athlete in badminton, winning a bronze in 2010 in Women's Doubles, placing fifth in Women's Doubles in 2011 and now qualifying in Mixed Doubles in 2012.

"The team did well at the Provincials in both the team and individual competitions," commented head coach, Morgan van Huekelom. "We came in fourth as a team for the competition and overall for the season. Everyone improved over the course of the season and played well. We play and compete well together and support each other throughout practice as well as in competition."

The Eagles will represent Kwantlen Polytechnic University at the CCAA National Championships being held at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC from March 1 – 3, 2012 and go into the Championships ranked 14th overall in the CCAA rankings list.
