Five Kwantlen Polytechnic University students have been awarded Premier’s Scholarships valued at $6,000 each that will go towards an exchange semester abroad. The announcement came late May from the Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society awarding 22 students across BC with the scholarships.
Kwantlen’s Premier’s Scholarship winners are Hayley Woodin, Judi Babcock, Qiu Yan Mo, Samantha Lego, and Shelayne Mulholland.
“It is a privilege to represent Kwantlen at Australia's Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and I look forward to learning from and sharing my personal experiences with like-minded individuals from all over the world,” says Judi Babcock, award recipient, Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “I am grateful to the Irving K. Barber Scholarship Society and the Victoria Foundation for this financial initiative that will go a long way to support my overseas studies.”
“Being awarded the Premier's Scholarship is an amazing honour,” says Samantha Lego, award recipient, Kwantlen Polytechnic University. ”I am so grateful, as this money will enable me to focus on my studies while in England and also to explore and expand on my knowledge culturally. Once again, I'd like to thank the Victoria Foundation for presenting me with such a prestigious award.”
All five students will be departing for the spring semester to various locations including Australia, the United Kingdom, and Finland to continue their studies in journalism, interior design and fashion design.
As part of their program, students at Kwantlen have the opportunity to study abroad and many are able to receive funding for these experiences. Taking part in exchange programs is a great way for students to increase their employability by gaining valuable intercultural skills and international experience.
This is the second year students from Kwantlen have received this scholarship. In 2011, Jessalyn Tran was awarded the scholarship for her exchange semester in the United Kingdom.
The Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society has awarded over $1.1 million in international scholarships since 2008, when the program began. Premier’s Scholarships are adjudicated and awarded all at once each year while One World scholarships of $1,000 to $3,500 are awarded throughout the year following adjudication by the individual post-secondary institutions.
