Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s faculty of community and health studies (CAHS) will be together on one campus – instead of two, starting September, 2012. The long anticipated move makes the wait worthwhile, as CAHS relocates to a completely renovated building on the Langley campus.
“The faculty of community and health studies move from Surrey to Langley will enable all CAHS faculty to be together in one building and on one campus,” says Dr. Tru Freeman, dean, CAHS, Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “This will have positive implications for student and faculty collaboration and inter-professional education across the breadth of health and education programming. We are looking forward to being part of the Langley community.”
Kwantlen offers an innovative, flexible and integrative approach to educational excellence in health, wellness and community programming. There are currently 10 programs housed within CAHS:
- bachelor of psychiatric nursing (BPN), degree completion for registered psychiatric nurses
- bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), degree completion for registered nurses (RNs)
- BSN – post baccalaureate (BSN-PB)
- critical care (CC) nursing certificate
- graduate nurse re-entry (GNUR) citation
- graduate nurse, internationally educated re-entry (GNIE) certificate
- health care assistant (HCAP) certificate
- health unit coordinator (HAUC) certificate
- internationally educated nurses assessment centre/professional studies
- special education teacher assistant (SETA) certificate
The BPN is a four year (eight-semester) program educating learners to be competent, creative and caring practitioners of psychiatric/mental health nursing. Learners apply their skills in the roles of direct care providers, educators, clinicians, researchers, managers, and entrepreneurs. Students who successfully complete the HCAP program have the option to enrol in the third semester of the BPN program.
The BSN-PB is an alternative to the traditional four-year entry level nursing program that serves mature learners and recognizes prior learning. Students who qualify for this program have already completed an undergraduate baccalaureate degree and will finish the nursing portion of their education in 27 months. Program courses are offered in a hybrid format through two residencies at Kwantlen, practice within health care agencies and communities, combined with innovative online learning formats. Using computer-based and mobile technologies online learning activities include case studies, tutorials, self-testing exercises, ePortfolios, simulations, creative and project work, and online group collaborations. Students who successfully complete the BPN program have the option to enrol in the third semester of the BSN-PB program.
Kwantlen’s faculty of CAHS continues to look for creative opportunities to expand and grow its programming.
